Lecture 11

Short Scenario

Management and Leadership Few facts Bilal works in Blocks Limited as a production manager Qadir works in Fones Limited as a production manager Both et at staff development meeting organized by Production Management Institute. New Health & Safety regulations are due to be implemented and this will require discipline in the workforce. Qadir is a newly appointed manager as compared to Bilal

Management and Leadership Requirement With reference to each organization (Blocks Limited and Fones Limited), discuss the role of management in motivation.

Solution Motivation is accomplishing things through the efforts of others. If you cannot do this, you will fail as a manager. Job performance = f(A x M x O) Ability Motivation Organizational support Leadership style Autocratic democratic These styles are again related to goals setting theory. Set challenging goals for motivated employees. Reinforce or punish the lazy employees.

Solution Autocratic style Strong, centralised control with a single source of authority. Subordinates follow orders. One-way communication (top to bottom).

Solution Democratic Authority and power decentralised. Employees involved in decision- making process. Employees are self-directed and intrinsically motivated.

Solution Blocks Limited Bilal has friendly relationship with the people having tenure 20 years or more Since they are loyal employees so less efforts are needed to motivate them. Democratic style helps him to implement health & safety regulations in his organization. Unskilled workers may be treated by using autocratic style. Mixed leadership approach is required.

Solution Fones Limited Qadir has to adopt democratic style for few reasons He is newly appointed He has to develop confidence All the employees under his supervision are highly skills and experienced Previous manager was not popular due to autocratic style
