Apprentice Scholars III Thursday, October 25, Day 4 EQ Focus- Implications and Consequences Lesson Four Focus: Characters Guy Montag- The protagonist, an unhappy, complacent man who is thirty years old. He has been a fireman for ten years. He meets Clarisse and finds that her outlook on life is refreshing. Mildred Montag (Millie) Guy's self-destructive wife, also thirty years old, who reveals to Montag the alienated existence of citizens in his society. She has never wanted children and considers her family to be television characters. Clarisse McClellan Montag's new neighbor, seventeen years old, who calls herself crazy and enjoys conversations. Her recalcitrance and nonconformity allow Montag to discover how jaded his view of life has become. Captain Beatty The antagonist of the book and Montag's superior, the Fire Captain, who functions as the apologist for the dystopian culture in which Montag lives. He is well read and uses his knowledge of books as a weapon to fight

The Protagonist & The Foil The central character in a work of literature is called the protagonist. The protagonist usually initiates the main action of the story and often overcomes a flaw, such as weakness or ignorance, to achieve a new understanding by the work’s end. A protagonist who acts with great honor or courage may be called a hero. An antihero is a protagonist lacking these qualities. Who is the Protagonist in F-451??

The Protagonist & The Foil The protagonist’s journey is enriched by encounters with characters who hold differing beliefs. One such character type, a foil, has traits that contrast with the protagonist’s and highlight important features of the main character’s personality. The most important foil, the antagonist, opposes the protagonist, barring or complicating his or her success. The most important foil, the antagonist, opposes the protagonist, barring or complicating his or her success. Who are the Foils in F-451?? Who is the most important foil?

Student will work in groups. Each group will be assigned a character: Mildred, Clarisse, or Beatty. Students will review the first ninety- one (approx.) pages of the novel and look for occasions when this character brings out dramatic responses from Montag.

How does the character leads Montag toward self- realization? How does Montag’s relationship to the character (you are focusing on) change? ***REMEMBER to use EVIDENCE from the NOVEL (pg# are excellent)
