How can setting goals and achieving them help improve your emotional health?

Explain Learning how to set realistic short-term and long-term goals is a very important strategy in developing good emotional health. There are some specific steps to follow to be successful in setting and achieving a goal.

Steps to Achieving Emotional Health Goals 1.Identify an emotional health characteristic you’d like to strengthen.  Building a better relationship with your mother.

Steps to Achieving Emotional Health Goals 2.Write a specific, measureable goal to help strengthen this characteristic.  By the end of the month, I will have a positive conversation with my mom at least 15 minutes each day.

Steps to Achieving Emotional Health Goals 3.Identify specific steps to accomplish your goals  Identify 3 things each day I want to talk to my mom about.  Find time to talk each day.  Prepare by planning what to share and what to ask.

Steps to Achieving Emotional Health Goals 4. Create a timeline to accomplish your goal.  Week 1—write down topics to discuss and prepare.  Week 2—talk 5 minutes a day with mom. Write down new ideas.  Week 3—talk 10 minutes a day with my mom. Write down new ideas.  Week 4—talk 15 minutes a day with my mom. Write down new ideas.

Steps to Achieving Emotional Health Goals 5.Who can help you achieve your goal?  Ask your friends what they talk to their moms about. Ask your health teacher for advice about how to approach your mom. Ask a sibling for help.

Steps to Achieving Emotional Health Goals 6.Evaluate your progress toward your goal.  Did you take time to think about what you wanted to talk about? Was your goal realistic?  How were your conversations with your mom?  What can be done to improve them?  How has your emotional health improved as a result of working toward this goal?
