How to Build an Ethernet Cable ASIF ISLAM LTEC 4550 University of North Texas

Introduction First commercially introduced in 1980, Ethernet cable is the still the most popular way of networking for home and office. Ethernet cabling technology was invented by Xerox Park and it’s very secure to network. And most importantly, it’s most the compatible networking cable ever invented There are six different types of Ethernet cable: Category or Cat 3, 5, 5e, 6, 6a and 7 and they differ for their transmission speed and interface. In this illustration, I will explain the steps in building the most popular and used Category 5e Ethernet Cable.

What We Need 1. Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable (Cat 5e) 2. RJ45 Connector (Modular Connector) 3. Crimping Tool 4. Cable Tester Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Standards of Wiring Ethernet Cable There are two standards of building Ethernet cable. 1. T568A 2. T568B We care going to use the most popular T568B Chart. [Online Screenshot].

Step 1 We will strip the cable jacket on one side; approximately 1.5 inch down from the end. Step 1, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 2 We will spread the four pair of twisted wire apart. If needed pulling the string will bring down the jacket more for convenience. Step 2, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 3 Next we will need our T568B standard chart handy. We will untwist all four pairs of wires and align them according to our chart. Step 3, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 4 Then we will cut the edge of the wire as straight as possible. (this step is very important before insertion) Step 4, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 5 Now we will push the aligned wires all the way inside the connector. (very important to push them in their appropriate guides) Step 5, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 6 We will push the connector in the crimping tool and squeeze all the way down Step 6, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 7 Now we can repeat step 1 to 6 for the other end of the cable Step 7, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

Step 8 [Our cable is built] To ensure the proper data flow between each end, we can use a network cable test to check both end. Step 8, Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014

By following step 1-8, I made two network cable Islam[Personal Screenshot]. July 21, 2014
