Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH Bowling Principles FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH FUNdamentals Instructor Introduction This module introduces you to the principles of bowling – and how to strike. It is important for you to understand what bowlers will learn as they progress and develop their skill, HOWEVER, as a FUNdamentals Instructor you will not teach the specific skill of making the ball hook. You will train them bowlers roll the ball in a STRAIGHT line and hit the pins. This skill underpins the foundation of any bowlers game and is vital for sparing. The practical workshop will give you the skills to help bowlers with this important element

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH How does a Strike occur? In a perfect strike the ball will hit four pins. For a right handed player this will be the Headpin (no. 1), then the 3 pin, the 5 pin, and finally the 9 pin. For a left-handed player this will be the Headpin (no. 1), then the 2 pin, the 5 pin, and finally the 8 pin FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH A Perfect Strike: the “pin action” When the ball hits the headpin, this pin goes into the 2 pin. The 2 pin then goes into the 4 pin which goes into the 7 pin. Meanwhile the ball will knock the 3 pin into the 6 pin which goes into the 10 pin And then after the ball has hit the 5 pin this goes into the 8 pin. For left-handers just reverse this. FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH Why do we hook a ball? less hook and “rev. rate” = more deflection through the pins more hook and “rev. rate” = less deflection through the pins FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH BETTER ENTRY ANGLE (4°-6°)= MORE STRIKE POSSIBILITY Why do we hook a ball? According to USBC research, a 4°-6° entry angle to the pocket provides more strike possibility. In order to provide that entry angle with a straight shot, bowlers would have to make the shot from 2 lanes away. Accordingly bowlers use a hook shot to provide that angle for more strike possiblity. FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH How does a ball hook? PAP: Positive axis point AXIS LINE Every ball released rotates on an Axis. This axis is an imaginary line through the centre of the ball extending from one side to the other. The two points on the ball where this imaginary line pierces the outer surface are called the Negative Axis Point and the Positive Axis Point (PAP). The PAP is on the right hand side of the grip (fingers above thumbs) for right- handers and the left hand side for left- handers. The position of the PAP and the axis line is determined by the swing plane and the release. FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH There are three phases of the “hook” shot. Phase One (yellow balls): SKID Phase Two (green balls): HOOK Phase Three (purple balls): ROLL The distances shown in this picture are representative of how far each phase lasts. (n.b. The orange and pink balls are just to highlight change of phase) How the ball hooks FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH How does a ball hook? PHASE ONE - SKID: The ball skids over the oil with a forward motion. The ball rolls over the axis angle that is created during the release (It can be a 0 degree angle which is forward roll or can be another angle such as the one above – 45 degree) – with a side roll. As the ball travels down the lane the axis angle decreases because of the friction. PHASE TWO - HOOK: When the ball leaves the oil it meets an increased amount of friction that lets the ball rotate through the angle of axis rotation. When the ball reaches 0 degrees of axis rotation it rolls straight. (Phase Three) FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH An example of a hook shot FUNdamentals Instructor

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH An example of a hook shot FUNdamentals Instructor As the previous slides have shown, the ability to roll the ball accurately up a straight (before the ball makes it hook) is an essential key to being consistent. When a bowler progresses and starts to develop a shot that hooks, the element of control comes into play. This is where the player who can roll the ball up a target line repeatedly will have the edge and see results sooner. The FUNdamentals Instructor is vital to this process

Level 1 - FOUNDATION COACH Check your understanding 1.In a perfect strike which pins will the ball hit for a right-hander? and a left-hander? RH – 1,3,5,9 LH – 1,2,5,8 2. In order, what are the 3 phases of a hook shot? Positive Axis Point Skid; Hook; Roll 3. What angles of entry give a bowler more striking possibility? Between 4 and 6 degrees 4. What does “hook” and “rev. Rate” promote through the pins? Less deflection 5. What does PAP stand for? 5. On which side of the grip is the PAP?Right for RH; Left for LH FUNdamentals Instructor
