EXP.2 GALVANIC DEPOSITION

INTRODUCATION - One of the common ways of providing protective coating to metals is electroplating. - Spontaneous plating is sometimes called deposition The process of electroplating for electrode that is immersed in solution occur in two ways: 1- Spontaneous Plating. 2- non spontaneous plating.

In electrolytic plating operations, the anode is made out of the metal to be plated and the cathode is the object on which the plating is to be done. In Spontaneous Plating the electroplating process directly without electric current, when the electrode that has more electronegative is immersed in metal ions that has less electronegative the coating by solution ions will be directly.

Materials: - one zinc strip - a container - 50 g. copper sulfate (CuSO4) - 1/2 liter of distilled water - a battery - an analytic balance - sandpaper

Procedure: 1.Use sandpaper to polish the Zn strip 2.Weigh zinc strip (W1) 3.Dip Zn strip in CuSO 4 solution for 20 min. 4.Weigh Zn strip (W2) 5.Calculate weight of Zn deposited (W2-W1) 6.Repeat the above steps with stainless steel strip 7.Comment on results.
