Presentation transcript:

 Ethics are rules that help us tell the difference between right and wrong  Based on values  Values are – what we think is important  These help us decide between right and wrong decisions.

Do you value Friendship? If so, would you:  Steal from a friend  Lie on a friend  Betray a friend

Your answers to the previous questions are an example of how your Morals are developed.  Morals are – Rules you use to decide what’s good and what’s bad.

 Morals and Values work together to create an Ethical Code or a set of behaviours/principles that people, institutions and businesses abide by.

 Does this school have a Code of Ethics?

 Refer to text page 78 for the Rogers Communications Inc. Official Code of Ethics

 Tough problems or questions that have to do with morality and ethics are known as Ethical Dilemmas.  There are ALWAYS potential “right” and “wrong” answers.  When a business makes a decision that weighs it’s morals and values against it’s profitability, it runs into a Ethical Dilemma.

 Downsizing of Staff  Dealing with harmful environmental chemicals  Antitrust issues  Employee rights  Discrimination against women/minorites

In business, there is a model that we can follow in order to make the BEST decision possible.

 Who will be Helped by the decision?  Who will be Harmed by the decision?  What are the pros of the decision?  What are the cons of the decision?  Will the decision survive the test of time?
