Dealing with Dates As well as telling the time, you will need to learn… the days of the week the months of the year and how many days each month contains.

Days of the Week The days of the week in the order they occur are… Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday …then back to Monday and so on… These 5 are ‘weekdays’ These 2 form the ‘weekend’

Months of the Year The months of the year in the order they occur are… January February March April May June July August September October November December 21 st December – 21 st March = WINTER 21 st March – 21 st June = SPRING 21 st June – 21 st September = SUMMER 21 st September – 21 st December = AUTUMN

No. of Days each Month Here is a well-known poem which may help you to learn how many days each month contains: 30 days have September, April, June and November All the rest have 31 Except for February alone Which has just 28 days clear, And 29 in each leap year

Calendars & Dates - Example Q. Count on 10 days from 27 th August A. Using the diagram count on 10 days to get to 6 th September OR +4  31 st August leaves 6 days into September August M Tu W Th F S S September M Tu W Th F S S

Timetables Working with timetables requires an ability to work with two-way tables (looking vertically down and then across or vice versa) to locate the required information. It also usually involves time calculations.

Timetable Example Q. How long does it take the 8:15am train from Swindon to get to London Paddington? A. Look across from Swindon to 08:15 then go down this column to the London row  it arrives in London at 09:10 8:15 09:00 09:10 Answer: = 55 mins Here is a snapshot of the start of the timetable for trains travelling from Bristol to London (Paddington): Bristol 07:10 07:25 07:40 Bath 07:30 07:45 08:00 Swindon 07:45 08:00 08:15 Didcot 08:05 08:20 08:35 Reading 08:15 08:30 08:45 London 08:40 08:55 09:10 45 mins (to the next hour) then another 10 mins
