Why Use a Three-Tier System for ALL Students? 1. Research supports the process 2. Prevention over identification:  readiness, inadequate delivery, need for DI, absence of DI, inadequate core curriculum 3. Teachers problem solve 4. Utilizes scientific inquiry and scientifically based research materials

Why Use a Three-Tier System for ALL Students? 5. Information makes sense to people:  Logical  Research-based  Discussion based on school staff experience  Utilizes daily data  Awareness of vertical & horizontal alignment of instruction in a school

Why Use a Three-Tier System for ALL Students? 6. Creates a record of interventions throughout a student’s academic career. 7. Creates a timeline for assistance for at- risk students. 8. Links assessments & instruction to interventions.

Let’s Take a Look… 1. Together, let’s browse through the packet, The RTI Guide: Developing and Implementing a Model in Your Schools. 2. Features:  Brief description of Instruction for each Tier  Essentials of Tiers  Examples of Tier Interventions  Tier Process Charts  Sections -“for the administrator & classroom teacher”

Let’s Talk to a Colleague About RTI… 3. Individually read through the section on Tier I (5 mins.)  Guiding Question: To what extent are you currently involved in implementing RTI at the district/school level? 4. Turn to a colleague and share your thoughts… (5 mins.) REPEAT steps 3 & 4 for Tiers II & III

Let’s Look at a few RTI Forms… Jim Wright’s, Top Ten list of the RTI-ready school for teachers, bldg. admins, districts RTI Implementation Planning Sheet Scientific Inquiry chart Tigard-Tualatin Standard Behavior Protocol, K-12 – format for academics, too!

Let’s Look at a few more… Available Building Supplemental/Intervention Program Resources Progress Monitoring: Administrator’s Summary and Outline (Ambivalence toward a progress monitoring system is fatal to the process and must be developed before intervention implementation.) A Study on RTI Implementation… trends Certain trends emerged through examining the data collected from the five sites:  All sites implemented RTI in phases. For schools and districts beginning implementation, this might mean introducing and “mastering” one RTI element at a time, implementing RTI in one grade level at a time, or, at the district level, piloting RTI in one school before implementing more widely.  The sites all relied on “creative” scheduling and flexible uses of funds and teachers to implement RTI. Consider realigning teachers and other staff’s responsibilities to fit within a RTI framework. RTI implementation will require some tough choices.  RTI implementation is a dynamic process. All sites reported changing their implementation throughout the year. Do what works. Use data to guide implementation.  If a practice appears to be increasing students’ scores over time, keep doing it. If not, change it.

Response to Intervention Understand the process Develop the process for your own district/building Sell the process Define what you already have and do Implement the process Now isn’t that easy!? (Don’t worry – we’ll be here to help…)
