Presentation transcript:

Introduction Inuit is a group that resides in the Arctic. Largest ethnic group living in Canada. The climate is -30 degrees Celsius and lower. A major concern is staying alive and healthy as possible.

Habitat Inuit live in Alaska ( built an igloo to live) Temperature stays below freezing approximately 10 months and really dark in night time with bright and sunny summers Inuit hunted caribou and musk-ox but mostly seal (important)-provided energy & protein. Plant food were extremely scarce Used animal fat (oil) for (fuel, soapstone, heat and light)

Subsistence Hunting is considered as a way of life for Inuit's, not only as a “subsistence technique.” Inuit's depend on the arctic creatures for food. Hunters hunt for seals in breathing holes and other animals like caribou and whales.

LEADERSHIP & GOVERNMENT For every family there is a leader which is the main person the father who takes care of the family and keeps them safe. The mother takes care of the food and the warmth while the children help making the shelter (igloo) The groups are mixed and contains 2 or more strong people to help with hunting (seals, caribou…) N

Religious or Spiritual customs The Inuit religion teaches that the world is inhabited by many kinds of spiritual and supernatural beings. The sun and moon are considered as brother and sister. Other spirits are associated with seas, lakes, mountains and other natural features. They guard their domains and can help people travelling in the region.

Social Organization & Kinship The society was organized by groups of people who hunted together. The food gets traded between different families who have different goods and offering to give. Newly married couple would live with their husband and receive a family name- couple would spend a year with the wife's family so that the husband could work along side of the bride’s father.

Tools and Weapons The Inuit’s used spears, harpoons and knives “Unaq” is a type of harpoon to hunt sea mammals such as whales and seals. “Kakivac” is used to catch fish in shallow water. “Nitsiq” is used to pull animals from animals from the water.

“Ulu” is a women’s knife for cutting skin clothing, boots etc “Ulu” is a women’s knife for cutting skin clothing, boots etc. Ulu was an everyday using knife. “Qulliq” is a lamp filled with sea oil for heat and light, a cooking stove in the homes.
