Presentation transcript:

1 Innovations in Remediation at Ivy Tech: A Progress Report Presentation to 2009 Learning College Conference Susan Newman-Bourne, Executive Director of Curriculum Development: Rod Brown, Director of Remediation and Basic Skill Development:

campuses Over 120,000 unduplicated students annually Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission Nation’s largest statewide community college system with single accreditation

3  68% of first-time, degree seeking students take at least one remedial course.  Remediation course success rates range from 52% in MAT 050 to 65% in ENG 032.  On average 57.4% of students who enrolled in a remedial course stayed in it and earned a C or higher.  While only 5.7% of remedial enrollment was delivered via distance education, the success rates for this delivery were significantly lower than face-to-face delivery.  Female students, students 15 – 19, and African-American students are more likely to take remedial courses than their respective counterparts Challenges

4 The Lilly Endowment Remediation Grant  Director of Remediation and Basic Skill Development  Academic Research Analyst  Accelerated Remediation and Occupational Remediation Pilots The Joyce Foundation Grant (Shifting Gears in Indiana)  The College for Working Adults  The Indiana Chamber of Commerce Report Card  The Indiana Data Sharing Agreement Project  Embedded Skills Pilots (Contextualized Remediation) Opportunities

5 Accelerated and Workplace Remediation Pilots  Ivy Tech--Fort Wayne –Compressed Remediation, Online Accelerated Remediation Labs, and Supplemental Instruction  Ivy Tech—Lafayette –Online Accelerated Remediation Labs and Supplemental Instruction  Ivy Tech—Kokomo –Dedicated Tutoring and Remedial Workshops  Ivy Tech—Indianapolis –Online Accelerated Remediation Labs  Ivy Tech—Evansville –Compressed Remediation and Supplemental Instruction  Ivy Tech—Bloomington –Compressed Remediation and Online Accelerated Remediation Labs Pilots

6 Contextualized Remediation Pilots  Ivy Tech--South Bend –Contextualized Mathematics in Industrial Technology  Ivy Tech—Muncie –Contextualized Mathematics in Industrial Technology  Ivy Tech—Columbus –Contextualized Remediation in Manufacturing Skills Standards Certification  Ivy Tech—Evansville –Contextualized Mathematics in Automotive Technology –Contextualized English in Early Childhood Education Pilots

Some Lessons Learned from Remediation Pilots  Contextualization requires significant time and effort; however, a compelling case could be made for embedding ASA competencies into and across select curricula.  Workplace pilots must involve clear coordination and expectations among all stakeholders.  Accelerated delivery is more than just scheduling classes twice a week.  Curriculum and professional development are essential elements in revamping remedial education.  The role of case management is critical in remedial and developmental education.

8 Next Steps for Ivy Tech  Accelerated Remediation Study –Hypothesis: “There exists no difference in overall student success and outcomes between 16-week and 8- week delivery of remedial courses.”  8-week ASA courses for Spring 2009  Encourage retesting upon completion of ENGL 031— Reading I, ENGL 024—Writing I, MATH 040—Basic Mathematics Skills, *MATH 044—Mathematics Implications

A Revised Academic Skills Advancement Math Sequence for Ivy Tech  Core 40—Algebra II required 2010  ITCC Intermediate Algebra becomes ASA level  Lessons learned from pilots –Time –Initial Success  Data on MATH 040 versus MATH 044
