Presentation transcript:

1.Physical Properties  characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without forming a new substance.

Physical Properties  Physical properties can either be: Qualitative Quantitative What’s the difference?

Qualitative Physical Properties Qualitative Property – characteristic that can be described not measured.  i.e. colour, smell, texture.

Quantitative Physical Properties Quantitative Property –property using a measurement.  Weight – 50 kg  Volume – 100 mL  Melting point - 0ºC  Boiling point - 100ºC  Freezing point - 0ºC  Density – 1 g/mL

2.Chemical Properties  Chemical Properties –behaviour of a substance as it becomes a new substance.  Eg. – Combustibility/Flammability - Reaction with Acid

Practice Questions 1.Identify the property described in each of the statements below. Write P for physical or C for chemical on the line in front of the given trait. cork floats on water. copper is made into wire to be used in electrical circuits. a steel blade can scratch glass. water boils at 100 ºC. alcohol is flammable. lemonade takes the shape of its container and has a constant volume. metal tools can rust if let outside in the rain.
