UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM Requirement Report Primary Consumable at the stage The primary aim of this first stage of the SDLC is to determine the purpose and requirements of a new system. PLANNING In the second stage of the traditional SDLC the aim is to decide which solution, if any, should be developed. DESIGNING This stage is where the actual solution is designed and built. This includes describing information processes and specifying system resources (participants, data/info, IT) to perform these processes. System Tools for understanding, explaining and documenting the operation of a system Context Diagrams Data Dictionaries Data Flow Diagrams Decision Tree’s Decision Tables Storyboards Designing the Information Technology Having used design tools to model the systems treatment of data into information it is now important to choose the Information Technology that will be involved. The ability of a system’s hardware and software to perform information processing is crucial.

IMPLEMENTING The fourth stage of the SDLC is where the new system is installed and commences operation. The old system ceases operation and is replaced with the new. TESTING, EVALUTING AND MAINTAINING The final stage of the SDLC commences with formal testing of the operational system to ensure it meets the needs specified in the requirement report.
