 Reading Goal:  As we read, we will identify how a speaker uses emotional appeals to persuade.  Today’s Big Question:  How do we use appeals to emotion to persuade people in everyday life?  Team Cooperation Goal:  Complete all tasks

 Review our Idea Tree. What persuasive techniques have we seen so far?  Looking back at President Roosevelt’s speech, what emotions do you think his audience was feeling?  Do you think it was his speech, or the situation itself, that produced these emotions? Explain.  What emotions of his own did the president communicate in his speech?

 Identify the emotion people might feel after each of these types of speech:  Principal’s speech announcing awards for the most improved test scores  Coach’s speech in the locker room after a very badly played first half  Speech by favorite TV star admitting to drug addiction  Speech by a mother whose toddler was rescued from a burning building
