MISSIONS AND PRESIDIOS OF TEXAS (Under spain)

MISSIONS were built by Spain to establish control of what is now Texas and to spread Catholicism to the native population. (GOD, Gold, Glory) PRESIDIOS were built by Spain to protect the Missions. People living in the Missions were religious officials such as fathers, monks. Native Texans also lived in the missions and were used as servants.

1st permanent European settlement in Texas 1st permanent European settlement in Texas. Missions and Presidios were a way to hold on to territory claimed by Spain.

1st Spanish Mission built in East Texas. After the failure of the mission, France’s St. Denis expressed interest in trading with the natives of Texas, as a result, Spain began building new missions in Texas.
