Sistine Chapel - interior

Sistine Ceiling Original ceiling was done by Piero Matteo d’ Amelia; golden stars on a blue sky Original commission called for the 12 Apostles as the subject Original technique: Buon fresco which molded because of the damp. Michelangelo assistant Jacopo L’Indaco invented “intonaco” a paint which resisted mold

Sistine Ceiling Assigned to Michelangelo by Julius II (il papa terrible) to make Julius look good and supercede accomplishments by his rival Alexander VI, a Borgia 131feet long by 43 feet wide; 5000 SQUARE FEET of frescoes Took 4 years – 7/1508 to 10/1512.

Sistine Ceiling Took 4 years because: –Damp plaster gets moldy –Julius II was off waging wars –Julius II was very ill

Sistine Ceiling Michelangelo invented specialized scaffolding that attached to the walls, was not pendant from the ceiling – no holes! Had to work around the pre-existing features of the building, including the windows, the source of light
