ABOUT GOLD Symbol: Au Atomic number: 79 Gold Is the second most expensive metal there is right now. It is one of the metals that you can look for and find in nature as the metal itself. Gold is measured by Carats. Pure gold is 24 carats. Other carats of gold are not only gold, they would be a compound of gold and bronze.

PROPERTIES OF GOLD Gold is a very independent element. It does not react easily with other elements. It can be in an environment where if other elements were there they would combine with oxygen or whatever other element is there. Gold is one of the shinny metals. That’s because it’s electrons are delocalized. Which means they are not attached only to one atom but with many atoms. Gold can conduct heat and electricity very well. It has the color of bright yellow, soft yellow, or chocolaty yellow.

History of Gold Mining Gold mining stated so long ago we don’t know when it started. Gold artifacts were found in ancient graves that are for kings and rulers that ruled a very long time ago.

Mining Techniques Rocker box The rocker box, also called a cradle, uses a riffles located in a high-walled box to trap gold in a similar manner to the sluice box. A rocker box uses less water than a sluice box and is thus well suited for areas where water is limited. A rocking motion provides the water movement needed for the gravity separation of gold in placer material.rocker box Panning Gold panningGold panning is mostly a manual technique of separating gold from other materials. Wide, shallow pans are filled with sand and gravel that may contain gold. The pan is submerged in water and shaken, sorting the gold from the gravel and other material. As gold is much denser than rock, it quickly settles to the bottom of the pan. The panning material is usually removed from stream beds, often at the inside turn in the stream, or from the bedrock shelf of the stream, where the density of gold allows it to concentrate, a type called placer deposits.placer deposits Byproduct gold mining Gold is also produced by mining in which it is not the principal product. Large copper mines, such as the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah, often recover considerable amounts of gold and other metals along with copper. Some sand and gravel pits, such as those around Denver, Colorado, may recover small amounts of gold in their washing operations. The largest producing gold mine in the world, the Grasberg mine in Papua, Indonesia, is primarily a copper mine.Bingham Canyon mineGrasberg mine

USES 1)Jewelry: most of the jewelry is made out of gold and that is the main use of gold. 2)2) Makeup and beauty: Gold atoms are put in things like lipstick, creams and makeup powered, so it can help the skin against wrinkles and age marks. 3)3) Cancer medicine: Lately scientists discovered that if a gold atom touches a cancer cell it burns it. but if it is put on a well cell then it won’t burn.
