Nutrition What do we need energy for? -to walk -to run -to think -to jump Nutrition = life

What did I eat? On a sheet of paper, write down everything you ate and drank yesterday? Remember to include everything.

Nutrition Nutrition is the building blocks of life! We need to eat good foods to grow healthy and strong. That’s why its important to eat the right foods.

My Plate = Fruits Vegetables Grains Protein Dairy Nutrition

Fruits and Vegetables should take up half of your plate. However, there should be more vegetables than fruits! Fruits: -apples -bananas Vegetables: -lettuce -broccoli Fruits and Vegetables

Fruit Low in fact, sodium, and calories Vitamin C – Grows and repairs body tissue – Helps heal cuts – Keeps teeth and gums healthy

Vegetables Low in fat and calories Vitamin A – keeps eyes and skin healthy – Protects against infections

Pop Quiz!!! Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? Stand up if they are fruits. Stomp your feet if they are vegetables. Tomatoes are scientifically fruits because they have seeds on the inside.

Grains -should take up a little over a quarter of your plate Example: -oat meal -brown rice -cereal -pasta Grains

B Vitamins Boost your metabolism Metabolisms convert your food into fuel The fuel is transported throughout your body so you can run, jump, and play

Protein -less than a quarter of your plate Example: -chicken -nuts -eggs -fish Protein

Building blocks for bones and muscle Fights off infections by making antibodies Creates hemoglobin which carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body Remember! – Try to eat lean meats (meats without the fats)

Calcium -one cup Example: -milk -cheese -pudding -frozen yogurt Calcium

Dairy Calcium – Builds strong bones and teeth As you get older, your bones get weaker Calcium makes sure they remain strong

Who Am I? Each of you will have an index card with a food name taped to your back. You will go around asking each other “yes” or “no” questions. Your goal is to try to guess correctly what your food is without looking at it. Good Luck! apple

Who Am I? Now that you know your food, try to organize yourselves into different combinations of a healthy plate.

Reflection With a partner, come up with ways that you can change your diet. Now, take out the sheet of paper that you documented the food you ate yesterday on. How can you fix it?
