Weatherhead East Asian Institute Fellowships & Grants for East Asian Studies at the Graduate Level

About the Institute The Institute’s mission is to advance the study of modern East Asia through academic research, public programs, and funding for the study of East Asia. Institute faculty represent the many academic departments at Columbia engaged in the study of modern East Asia. The Institute is not an academic department, but a regional institute established in 1949.

Fellowships and Grants-General Awards vary between $1,000 and more than $20,000 Competitive, with acceptance rates varying from 10% to 30% Uses of the fellowships and grants include Research Language acquisition Internship General academic year support For use during summer or academic year

Sources of Funding & Eligibility Sources of funding vary and include Foundation Support, including the Weatherhead Foundation Individual and Family Donations Federal Government Eligibility varies according to each funding opportunity Some require that you be a SIPA student Some require that you be a Ph.D. candidate Some require US citizenship or Permanent Resident status Detailed eligibility requirements will be discussed

Application Process-General Apply online on WEAI website For most fellowships and grants submit: Basic Application Form Specific Grant or Fellowship Application form(s) transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc., requested on the specific fellowship or grant application form For hard copy materials (transcript, reference letters, etc.): Do not use staples or paper clips Place in folder or large envelope Reference letters should be sealed and included with other materials

Application Guidelines Applicants may apply for multiple awards. Application materials will not be returned. Only the relevant application materials for each fellowship and grant will be reviewed. Application materials received after the deadline will not be considered. Incomplete applications may not be considered.

Application Review and Notification Weatherhead East Asian Institute and other Columbia faculty review all applications Notification via on a rolling basis through late April

Award Disbursement Awards are disbursed directly to students’ Columbia University accounts Awardees then receive a check or direct deposit through the Office of Student Financial Services

Obligations of Recipients All recipients must submit a one to two page report of their funded activities— except for FLAS, which has its own online reporting requirements Recipients who serve in internships must submit a letter or completion from the host organization Federal government grants have penalties for non-compliance!

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) Federal government program that funds foreign language study. US citizens and permanent residents are eligible. East Asian languages include Chinese (at the 3 rd year level or above) Japanese (at the 3 rd year level or above) Korean (at the 3 rd year level or above) Tibetan (at least 2 nd year level or above), Summer only Academic Year FLAS is considered “substitutional” funding for Ph.D. students.

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) Eligibility US Citizens and Permanent Residents only GSAS, SIPA, Teachers College—M.A. or Ph.D. Must enroll in US Department of Education Approved Language Program Applications for GSAS students available in 107 Low Library. Summer FLAS Funding for a full-time course of summer language study in the United States or abroad— at least 140 hours over the course of at least six weeks. Provides Tuition Health and basic insurance fees $2,500 stipend Average of 5 awards per summer Selection criteria include Academic excellence commitment to the language and using it as part of long-term academic or professional career goals

Academic Year FLAS Funding for academic year language study. Must also take one East Asian studies course. Provides Tuition Health and basic insurance fees $14,500 stipend Average of 8 or 9 awards per academic year Selection criteria include Academic excellence commitment to the language and using it as part of long-term academic or professional career goals

Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) Grant Funds summer projects focused on politics, economy, business, international and public affairs, law, society, and media in modern East Asia are eligible Eligibility All CU Graduate Students—M.A. and Ph.D. Priority will be given to students for research or secured internships in Southeast Asia, and to students who wish to use their research or internship to expand their expertise beyond their main country of interest.

Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) Grant Provides Partial support for travel and cost of living expenses for the summer (amount varies between $1,000 and $3,000) Average of 10 awards per summer Selection criteria include Academic excellence Demonstrated commitment to Southeast or East Asia, and to incorporating it in one’s long-term academic or professional career goals For projects outside of Southeast Asia, apply for the Weatherhead Training Grant or Weatherhead Ph.D. Training Grant instead.

Opportunity for M.A. & Professional School Students Weatherhead Training Grant

Provides summer funding to support projects that develop academic and/or professional expertise that cross traditional disciplinary, geographic, or temporal boundaries, and/or combines regional and functional expertise. Eligibility M.A. students in GSAS and all professional school (Business, Journalism, Law, SIPA) students Examples of projects include research or unpaid internships in East Asia, or summer acquisition of a second language. For projects in Southeast Asia apply for the SYLFF Grant instead.

Weatherhead Training Grant Provides Up to $3,000 in support Average of 6 awards per summer. Selection criteria include: Academic excellence Demonstrated commitment to East Asia, and to incorporating it in one’s long-term academic or professional career goals
