MA Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education Licensure Definitions “New” Regulations - “Primary” License is your teaching license at the grade level of your fieldwork “Initial” License is the stage of license you will receive upon completing your Teacher Education Program and passing the MTEL Grade Level refers to Grades 5-8 and 8-12 Practicum means fieldwork via your TEP program Field refers to the Subject area of the license SEI: Sheltered English Endorsement: new in 2013/14. You will get this by taking module- T-210Z1 Dimensions of Diversity: English Language Learners Validity of License -Initial licenses are valid for 5 years of employment in MA, renewable once. -Professional licenses are valid for 5 years and renewed through the Recertification process every 5 years.

California Reciprocity: Preliminary/Clear Credentials You can apply for the Preliminary credential upon receiving your MA license (See Option 1). Read this!! It contains important information for you since you obtained your license outside of CA. CBEST required. You have a total of 5 years to meet requirements for the Clear credential. General information on CA state office schedules: When you apply-All required documents, including application, fingerprint cards, MA license, must be mailed to CA together (keep copies and send certified mail)

California continued… You have a total of 5 years to meet the following requirements for the Clear Credential: (ESL and CSET) Note on English language authorization – The English language authorization requirement is met with the MA ESL license (not SEI endorsement). ESL must be on the MA license you submit to CA. If you don’t meet this English language requirement, you will have to apply for the Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) credential. Even though you may have 2 licenses from MA (e.g., English HS and ESL), you are to still apply for a single-subject credential, because - CA considers the ESL license as a qualifier, not a credential. CA Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET) –CSET exams:

New York Reciprocity: NY Conditional Initial Certificate 1.Possess Massachusetts license 2.NY Fingerprint Clearance 3.Pass the MY EAS, ALST, and CST exams required for the Initial certificate 4.Complete all required NY workshops: 2.During 1 complete the edTPA assessment, to be issued the NY Initial certificateedTPA Process/timeline Fall/Early Spring - Have fingerprints taken. Early Spring: - Apply for the NY certificate. July: - Interns mail MA license to NY. (Keep copies of everything you send via certified mail.)
