Pinot Grigio – What we know PINOT GRIGIO: Popular synonym name of the Pinot Gris where grown in Italy, the Alsace region of France and elsewhere. Planted extensively in the Venezia and Alto-Adige regions of Italy. Also finding homes in N. America, Australia and New Zealand. 6

Pinot Grigio – What we know PINOT GRIGIO: - High bud fertility and can tend to over crop beyond the ability to ripen so habitat- suitable rootstocks to be chosen. The variety can create crisp, dry wines with good acid "bite" where grown in cool climate regions such as the Alto-Adige/Trentino regions of N. Italy, New Zealand and Washington state. 7

Pinot Grigio – California 8 Ideal growing seasons are the norm. There is occasionally inclimate weather. Spring rains end, cool to warm and dry conditions prevail until late fall. Pinot Grigio ripens early in the season prior to late summer heat and prior to early fall rains. Development of ripe flavours of apple, pear, with hints of stone fruit, floral and spice.

Pinot Grigio On the Vine 9696 Pinot Grigio: Vigorous production when planted in rich soils and cool to warm climates. Clusters tend to mature with varying uniformity gaining colour as verasion proceeds. Colour varies during ripening within each cluster

The Wines we will taste today 10 Gallo Family Vineyards: Grapes are grown in the Delta region, and within the Central Valley of California. Drip irrigation is common, the first two basal leafs are pulled to allow for air flow and speckled light to reach the fruit. Grapes are harvested on flavour of ripe desert (Fuji) apple, pear, and notes of floral and white melon. Seeds are mature and brown, skin looses turgidity (softens), pulp becomes soft and juicy. Typical harvest parameters: Brix, 7.0TA, pH

The wines we will taste today PINOT GRIGIO Seghesio: the first grower of Pinot Grigio in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley. “Pinot” means small and “Grigio” means gray. In 1997, their first crop caught them off guard when this white grape turned violet at verasion. The grapes are handpicked in the early morning and pressed immediately to limit color extraction from the rose-colored skins. Flavors of honeydew melon and spiced apples with floral notes Stainless steel fermented 11

What you did not expect from California: 12 In summary, growing regions around the world produce varying styles of Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris). These styles vary from clear white wine to Rose coloured still wine and sparkling wine. In California the predominant style is fresh fruit, medium bodied wines with ripe apple and floral notes, citrus and spice flavours can be found.
