Types of patients Voluntary patients: Patients who volunteer to be in the mental health hospital for self harm, eating disorders or other problems. Involuntary patients: Patients that have to go without a choice. They normally require immediate treatment. Many patients are normal people just with a strained relationship or have a substance problem. Patients family should show support to help them with their problems.

Costs Many institutions recommend that patients stay a minimum of 3 months. On average an stay at a mental health/substance 3-6 months. Most facilities cost about $7,000 a month. The average cost of a stay is $21,000-$42,000

Treatments Counseling- the patient meets with a psychologist and discusses how he/she feels. Self Help Groups- groups of people with similar problems meet together. They follow a 12-Step program similar to that used in AA groups. Withdrawal Therapy (Detox)- The patient is slowly weaned off a substance. Many patients with mental health problems go on medications to help them. Brain Stimulation treatments- activities such as games and other activities used to stimulate the brain. This is used when medication is not working and/or the patients have depression.

Interesting Facts About half of all mental disorders develop before the age of 14. Mental Health problems are the leading cause in suicide each year. Alcoholism is the most untreated addiction in America. The Average age a person first experiments with drugs is 13. Over 50% of all car accidents have to with drugs
