WELCOME! CHAPARRAL HILLS LIBRARY Exploring the World through READING

Book Care Always handle books with clean hands. Keep your library books away from food and drink. If you need to save your place; stick a bookmark in that space. Never mark or write in library books. Be careful turning pages so they won’t wrinkle or tear. Keep books safe and out of view; from little ones and dogs that chew! Carry your library books in a plastic bag or your book bag. Keep your books clean and dry. Return your books on time so others can read them too!

Library Manners Use quiet inside voices Use walking feet Use a shelve marker Put books on shelve with spine facing out. Return books on desk with barcodes facing up.

How to Find Books What is a call number? A call number is a group of numbers and/or letters put together to describe where to find every book in the library. A call number is located at the bottom of the book on the spine.

Difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction Books FICTION=Not true Books that are made up by the author, or are not true. Non-Fiction=True Opposite of Fiction. True books about real things, people, events, and places.

How Books are Shelved FICTION Fiction books are placed on the shelf in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. NON-FICTION Non-Fiction books are shelved by their subject’s category using the Dewey Decimal System.

Using the Dewey Decimal System 000’s – Information and mysterious things. 100’s - Feelings 200’s - Religion, myths, and legends 300’s - Holidays, fairy tales, and the social world. 400’s - Languages 500’s - Science, math, planets, and dinosaurs. 600’s - Airplanes, cars, and cooking. 700’s - Drawing, music, and sports. 800’s - Poetry, jokes, and riddles. 900’s - Geography, people, places, and history.

Choosing Books Ages 3-5 : Choose books with simple concepts like numbers, shapes, or colors, as well as books that encourage children to participate. Ages 6-8 : Children need to be exposed to words between 6 and 60 times before they can memorize and read them fluently without stopping to sound out words. Ages 9-12 : Expose children to a wide variety of reading materials, such as science fiction, mystery, and non- fiction helps build vocabulary and comprehension.
