CONTINENTAL EXPLORERS LESSON OBJECTIVE: TO NAME, LOCATE AND DESCRIBE THE FEATURES OF THE EARTH’S 7 CONTINENTS. BELL WORK: TRY AND LIST THE 7 CONTINENTS AND 5 OCEANS ON YOUR WHITEBOARD. LEARNING OUTCOMES All will identify and locate the earth’s 7 continents and be able to recall them next lesson. Level 3 Most will describe in detail the key characteristics of one of these continents. Level 4 Some will hypothesize whether the continents have always been the way they are today. Level 5/6

ACTIVITY 1: CONTINENT EXPLORERS “500 years ago Christopher Columbus set sail on his journey to discover the Americas. To start the lesson today you will go on a voyage of discovery around school to find the 7 continents of the earth…

The Mission…. In your groups you must explore Floor 3 and Floor 4 of the school. Find the 7 continents that are located on pink sheets around school (some may be hidden so you will have to look carefully if you are to discover them all!). Take a picture of each of the sheets with your iPad to prove you found them and then come back here for more instructions You have no more than 8 minutes (Give someone the role of photographer and someone else the role of timekeeper within your group). The most successful group of explorers will receive a prize.

ACTIVITY 2 Use your own knowledge and the iPad to correctly label each of the continents on your worksheet. EXTENSION: Can you also label correctly the earth’s 5 Oceans?

ACTIVITY 3: Continental Experts! Now that you know the names and locations of each of the continents, it is time to get to know them in a little more detail. Each of your groups have been given a continent. Your task now is to use your own knowledge and your iPad to find as much out about that continent as possible. Write down what you find out about your continent and prepare to present to the class (this needs to be 1 minute long and you must decide who is the Speechmaker.
