Christianity Christianity is the worlds biggest religion, with about 2.1 billion followers worldwide, 42 million of them living in Great Britain but only 6 million of them practise the religion like going to church and praying. Christianity dates back thousands of years before Christ. Christianity became an official religion of the Roman Empire in 392 AD.

Worship Christians worship in churches which is spiritually lead by either a priest or minister. Christian worship involves praising God in music and speech, readings from scripture, prayers of various sorts, a sermon, and various holy ceremonies. The Christian church believes in one baptism into the Christian church, whether this be as an infant or as an adult, as an outward sign of an inward commitment to the teachings of Jesus. Holy Bible The Christian holy book is the Bible, and consists of the Old (1200 and 165 BC) and New (first century AD) Testaments. Prayer is the means by which Christians communicate with their God. The Bible is an entire library, with stories, songs, poetry, letters and history, as well as literature. Baptism

God Christians believe that there is only one God, but that there are three elements to this one God: God the Father God the Son (Jesus Christ) The Holy Spirit Life After Death Christians believe that there is a life after earthly death. While the actual nature of this life is not known, Christians believe that many spiritual experiences in this life help to give them some idea of what eternal life will be like. Christianity has taught Heaven as the location of the throne of God as well as the holy angels. Heaven is also understood as the abode for the righteous dead in the afterlife.

Christian Calendar

Advent is a season observed as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Advent starts on the 1 st December and lasts for 24 days. Christmas Day (25th December) is the day of Jesus’ birth, known as the nativity. Mince pies are a traditional dessert at Christmas time. The mince pie was made in an oblong shape to represent Christ’s crib in the manger. The spices in it, specifically cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, were symbolic of the three gifts given by The Three Wise Men. The Twelve days of Christmas start on December 25 th and lead up to Epiphany on January 6 th. Epiphany is an ancient Christian feast day and is significant in a number of ways. Epiphany is usually celebrated as the time the Three Wise Men arrived to present gifts to baby Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12).

Shrove Tuesday (preceding Ash Wednesday) is commonly known as Pancake Day, they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Ashes are ceremonially placed on the heads of Christians on Ash Wednesday, either by being sprinkled over their heads or, more often, by being marked on their foreheads as a visible cross. “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Based on Genesis 3:19). Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.

Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9) when palm branches were placed in his path. On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixion. His body was taken down from the cross, and buried in a cave/tomb. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter Eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus and the chick hatching represents the start of new life. On the night before Jesus died he instructed his followers to remember him by eating bread and drinking wine together. Ascension Day celebrates Jesus’s ascension to heaven after he was resurrected on Easter Day. Pentecost is the old Greek and Latin name for the Jewish harvest festival.
