Experiencing the Real World In Taiwan, students usually go to college right after high school. In other countries, students also choose to continue. However, they often take a year off before starting college. This is called a gap year. Most young people like to travel during their gap year. Others get a job and earn money, or they do volunteer work. Some mix work and travel and have a working holiday. UNIT 10 Mysteries of the WorldUNIT 11 Gap Years

There are even businesses that help young people plan their gap year. They help them find interesting jobs. They also make sure that they have a safe place to stay overseas. Some parents don’t want their kids to take a gap year. They think that their children will forget their lessons from high school. They believe that it’s best for students to finish their education first. UNIT 11 Gap Years

Other parents love the gap year idea. They want their kids to see the real world and become more independent. Parents argue that this experience will help them make better decisions. Taking a gap year is becoming more common around the world. Someday, maybe everyone will take a year off. After all, not all knowledge is found in books. UNIT 11 Gap Years

Thinking about Taking a Year Off? UNIT 10 Mysteries of the World More and more people are taking gap years. We sat down with three people to ask why. Nicole Wheels, London, England I have lots of interesting ideas in my head. But I used to be too shy to share. So, I went to Los Angeles to take acting classes. I’ll never forget my first play. My body was shaking. When I went on the stage, however, I calmed down and did well. I’m still shy, but now I can control it. Sometimes, I even give my phone number to handsome guys. UNIT 11 Gap Years

Susan Wang, Ottawa, Canada I think living in Kenya changed me. I realized there that money isn’t the most important thing. We showed people how to work on a modern farm. We gave them knowledge. This is a gift that is forever. It felt good helping others. Going to Kenya gave me something too — experience. I hope to go back someday. UNIT 11 Gap Years

Mike Carson, Berkeley, California I studied Chinese in college, but I never had a chance to practice. All my friends spoke English, even my Chinese friends. So, I decided to go to China between my first and second year. After six months, my Chinese had improved a lot. I could talk about food, weather, and the news. I still made mistakes, but people understood me. If you’re interested in learning a language, put yourself in the right environment. It’s the best and most interesting way to improve.
