Evaluation Q1: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Natalie Tawney

Independent or mainstream? Our film is a more independent film as it is quite low budget and the actors are new emerging talent, as apposed to mainstream films that have a cast full of Hollywood stars and have a big budget. The characters and narrative drive the film rather than expensive special effects. Our film also has a small marketing campaign so will use viral marketing and film festivals to advertise.

As part of research into distributing our film we had to look at different film distributors that would be suitable to distribute our film Here is a list of film distributors that produce independent films similar to our own: INDEPENDENT - produced drama /crime thriller ‘Metro Manila’ and thriller ‘We need to talk about kevin’. Vertigo films - produced sci-fi horror film ‘The facility’ and action thriller ‘Point Blank’. Verve pictures - produced drama ‘Shell’. Axiom films - produced drama/ thriller ‘White Elephant’. Independent film distributors

I think this film company would be likely to distribute our film as it is an independent company and the films it has produced are quite similar to our own film. For example, the film ‘Point Blank’ is a thriller about a Man rescuing his beloved wife from a kidnapper. The film is about catching the antagonist with the protagonist motivated by wanting his wife safe and with him. This relates to our film as our protagonist is trying to track down the killer of his friend and is motivated by the fact that he lost his friend because of this murderer. Another film they produced that is similar to ours is ‘The facility’. Although this follows the horror genre rather than thriller it still has some related themes to our film. This film is about volunteers beginning a clinical trial for a new experimental drug that turns out to have unexpected side effects like sending them on murderous rampages. This relates to our theme of murder in our film and how the antagonists in both our film Investslaughter and The Facility are not quite with it and seem to enjoy killing. Vertigo films

Where will our film be distributed to? Our film is likely to be distributed to small cinemas and art houses like the Picture House cinema chain as it is unlikely to reach the stage of being shown in large cinema chains such as cineworld and multiplexes. Our film will be shown at film festivals and will be marketed via adds on youtube and virally rather than billboards and expensive advertising techniques.

Box office figures From looking at independent thriller films that are similar to ours, we decided that a realistic goal for box office figures is to get a figure of approximately £2million. I did some research into box office figures and thriller film ‘Layer Cake’ got a box office figure of $2,339,957. Layer Cake is about a successful cocaine dealer who plans an early retirement from the business, but is handed a tough assignment and not knowing who he can trust, he has to use all his 'savvy', 'telling' and skills which make him one of the best, to escape his own. This film is similar to ours because it is crime related and an independent thriller. It also includes the themes/ conventions of retiring from an intense business and trying to get out of a sticky situation. I thought that our film is likely to attract a similar size audience to Layer Cake and so our box office figures would be similar. I also looked at the independent thriller films Machinist and Kidulthood that got similar box office figures of between £1million and £2million.
