Word Problems Tape Diagrams Double Number Lines Created by: Mrs. J Couch

Practice If 1 inch is approximately 2.54 centimeters, how many centimeters are equal in length to 3.5 inches?

Practice The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 6:4. If there are 30 students in the class, how many are boys?

Practice The graph below compares cups to pints. Which of the following ordered pairs would also satisfy this relationship? A. (4, 2) B. (2, 4) C. (2, 0) D. (1, 2)

Practice The table below shows the cost for varying number of books. If the relationship stays the same, determine the value of n.

Tape Diagrams Drawings that look like a segment of tape, used to illustrate number relationships. Also known as strip diagrams, bar models or graphs, fraction strips, or length models

Practice A 5th grade class counted the number of cars that went by the front entrance of the school between 9 o’clock and 10 o’clock. The total number of cars counted were 156. There were 3 times as many passenger cars as trucks. How many passenger cars and how many trucks were counted?

Practice There are 3.5 times as many fifth graders at School A than School B. There are 115 more students at School A than School B. How many students are there at School A how many students attend School B?

Double Number Line They are used for understanding the equivalence of two related numbers. It’s called “double” because each mark on the line has two sets of numbers matched to it. The top row of numbers describes the whole represented by the line in one way and the bottom row describes the whole in another way. Because the whole line is the same, it’s possible to see the equivalences between the rows of numbers at any point on the line.

Practice

Practice Kyle has sold 28 candy bars. That’s 4 times as many as Jack sold. How many more candy bars did Kyle sell than Jack?

Practice Mrs. Wesley purchased 42 meters of wire. She used 3/7 of the wire in a science experiment. How many meters of wire did Mrs. Wesley have left?

Copy and finish for homework: At the ski park each lift holds 3 people, and there are 5 lifts. The lift takes 10 minutes. There are still 150 people in the line, and the lift closes in exactly one hour. Will all the people be able to ride the lift? Justify your answer.
