Presentation on Hispanic Heritage Month

The History of Hispanic Heritage Month On September 17, 1968 the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives agreed to Public Law , which states the following: Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that the President hereby authorized and requested to issue annually a proclamation designating the week including September 15 and 16 as "National Hispanics Heritage Week" and calling upon the people of the United States, especially the educational community, to observe such week with appropiate ceremonies and activities. Twenty years later a new public law was passed by "voice vote". Public Law was passed on August 17, 1988 establishing September 15-October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. In addition, Mexico achieved independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. Lastly, El Dia de la Raza (The Day of the Race) is celebrated on October 12th. Hispanic cultures have various similarities an differences in food, music, folklore, tradition, heritage, and religion. All these factors have made us a unique race of people in the United States. The United States 2000 Census stated that Hispanics were 12.5% of the nation's total population. A number that has continue to increase, which will eventually make Hispanics the majority. From:
