RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES GEOTHERMAL ENERGY BY: JESS & HOLLY

WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY? Geothermal energy is heat that comes from the core of the earth. It comes from the Greek roots geo (earth) and therme (heat). It is renewable because heat is constantly being produced inside the earth. We get this energy in the form of steam or hot water and use it to heat buildings or produce electricity.

HOW DO WE USE IT? Geothermal heat can be used directly through pipes to heat buildings. Springs have been used before for bathing, cooking and heating. There are industrial uses for geothermal energy including; food dehydration, gold mining, and milk pasteurizing. Dehydration of food like fruit is the most common industrial use of geothermal energy. How can geothermal energy produce electricity? Most power plants use fossil fuels to generate steam which rotates the turbine that activates a generator to produce electricity. Geothermal power plants use steam produced from reservoirs instead. "Geothermal electricity production." Geothermal energy:. © Copyright renewableenergyworld.Com, n.D. Web. 01 feb

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? Geothermal energy comes from the earth’s core. “The earth’s geothermal energy is created by the decay of radioactive materials in the core and in the surrounding layers of rock.” Jessa, Tega. "Where does geothermal energy come from." Universe today. N.P., 14 Oct Web. 02 Feb

WHERE DO WE GET IT? Heat can also find its way in three ways: volcanoes (where volcanic gases are released), hot springs and geysers. Most active sites are located where there are plate tectonic boundaries (where there are volcanoes and earthquakes). Magma comes close to the edges of plate tectonics and heats the groundwater trapped in porous rock. Geologist’s most effective way of finding these reservoirs underground are drilling holes deep into the earth and testing the temperatures. "GEOTHERMAL." EIA ENERGY KIDS. ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES It’s a very stable and reliable resource. Geologists can predict how much energy will be produced- very efficient for meeting energy demand. Compared to wind/solar energy which supply can rely on the weather The ground is resistant to seasonal temperature changes meaning, a couple meters underground can sustain a reliable heat source with a geothermal heat pump for all seasons. This power can only be sustainable if it is properly handled. Only someone who is educated in this field can operate these plants at specific locations. Geothermal reservoirs are very location specific. Some areas are more resourceful than others and when this energy is transported in the form of hot water, there's a significant energy loss
