What Is Virtual Infrastructure? Virtualization is a technology that allows you to transform hardware into software. Virtualization allows you to run multiple operating system simultaneously on a single computer. Each copy of an operating system is installed into a virtual machine. Virtualization is not either of these: Simulation Emulation

How Does Virtualization Work? Allows multiple operating system instances to run concurrently within virtual machines on a single computer. A virtualization layer is installed. Host Operating System-Based Virtualization A host-based virtualization system requires an operating system (such as Windows or Linux) to be installed on the computer. Before Virtualization:  Single OS image per machine  Software and hardware tightly coupled  Running multiple applications on same machine often creates conflict  Underutilized resources  Inflexible and costly infrastructure After Virtualization:  Break dependencies between OS and hardware  Manage OS and application as single unit by encapsulating them into VMs  Strong fault and security isolation  VM’s are hardware-independent: they can be provisioned anywhere Server Virtualization Basics

VMotion Provides Moves a running VM from one ESX server to another ESX server, leveraging shared storage But the storage resource stays in the same storage location
