Architectural and Environmental Photography By Lauren and Kat

What is it? What humans do to the landscape.

Health and safety Be careful in the environment you are in: it may be unsafe. For example, shooting on top of a skyscraper or other unstable surfaces.

Architectural Photography

The Bechers Bernhard Becher (1931 – 2007), and Hilla Becher, (b.1934), are German photographers who worked as a married duo to make typologies (photographic series) of buildings, particularly industrial ones. They first collaborated in 1959, taking portraits of modern industrial buildings in old factory site.

Technical Details They used large format cameras to create a series of photos. They use natural lighting. The day these images were taken it was a cloudy day making the lighting even casting little light shadows. Gravel Plants This series of images of the same subject, but from different angles, so the spectator could view all of the different structures at once. The building is very angular and has lots of different viewpoints that make the building seem unrecognisable in each shot due to the various segments.

Robert Adams Robert Adams (born May 8 th 1937). He is an American photographer who has focused on the landscapes of western America. In much of his work Adams shows man’s effect on nature and man’s destruction of what was. His more recent work is less focused on architecture and more towards nature itself.

Mark Leong Mark Leong is an American-Chinese photographer. He graduated from the department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard university in he was awarded a George Peabody Gardner travelling fellowship to spend a year taking photos in China. Later in his life he returned to China in 1992 as an artist in residence at the central academy of fine art in Beijing. He then decided to live permanently there and still lives there today. His photography observes what changes and what remains the same in the worlds most populous country. He does a lot of Beijing cityscapes. His images have appeared in many magazines across the world. For example, in Time, Fortune, The New Yorker and National Geographic.

Edmund Sumner - Contemporary Edmund Sumner grew up in a family of architects and designer and so he also developed a understanding and appreciation for architecture and design. However, it wasn’t until 1995 he decided he wanted to incorporate his passion for architecture with his other love, photography. His aim in photography is to promote contemporary architecture. He is currently based in London but he travels regularly across the world, looking at new styles of architecture. The Basketball Arena, London 2012
