8/17/20152 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION WIRELESS COMMUNICATION WIRED USB WIRELESS USB FEATURES WUSB TOPOLOGY PEROFRMANCE PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES CONCLUSION

8/17/20153 INTRODUCTION The Wireless USB is the first the high speed Personal Wireless Interconnect. Wireless USB will build on the success of wired USB, bringing USB technology into the wireless future. Usage will be targeted at PCs and PC peripherals, consumer electronics and mobile devices. To maintain the same usage and architecture as wired USB, the Wireless USB specification is being defined as a high-speed host-to-device connection. This will enable an easy migration path for today's wired USB solutions.

8/17/20154 What is wireless communication? In modern usage, the term WIRELESS COMMUNICATION refers to communication without cables or cords, chiefly using radio frequency and infrared (i.e., IrDA) waves. E.g., wireless networking of computers. Similarly “Wireless Universal serial Bus (W.U.S.B.)” connects devices like printers, mouse, external hard drives and digital camera to our PC’s without a single wire and speed and accuracy is still the same as wired connection. This technology operates over a range of around 10 meters(30 feet). Also no line of sight connection is required.

8/17/20155 USB USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a way of setting up communication between a computer and peripheral devices. USB is intended to replace many varieties of serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, PDAs, game pads and joysticks, scanners, digital cameras, printers, personal media players, flash drives, and external hard drives. For many of those devices, USB has become the standard connection method. USB was designed for personal computers, but it has become commonplace on other devices such as PDAs and video game consoles, and as a power cord between a device and an AC adapter plugged into a wall plug for charging.

8/17/20156 WIRELESS USB(WUSB) Wireless USB is a short-range, high-bandwidth wireless radio communication protocol created by the wireless USB promoter group. Wireless USB is sometimes abbreviated as "WUSB", although the USB implementers forum discourages this practice and instead prefers to call the technology "Certified Wireless USB" to differentiate it from competitors. The basic transport mechanism for Wireless USB is the ultra-wide band (UWB) radio platform. USES OF WUSB. Wireless USB is used in game controllers, printers, scanners, digital cameras, MP3 players, hard disks and flash drives. It is also suitable for transferring parallel video streams, while utilizing the Wireless USB over UWB bandwidth.

8/17/20157 Some of the WUSB devices.

8/17/20158 FEATURES Wireless USB will build on the success of Wired USB. An important goal of the WUSB Promoter Group is to ensure that wireless USB offers users the experience they have come to expect from wired USB. Toward that end, the Wireless USB standard is being designed to support the following features: Backward compatibility : Wireless USB will be fully backward compatible with the one billion wired USB connections already in operation. Moreover, Wireless USB will be compatible with current USB drivers and firmware and provide bridging from wired USB devices and hosts.

8/17/20159 HIGH PERFORMANCE : At launch, Wireless USB will provide speeds up to 480 Mbps, a performance comparable to the wired USB 2.0 standard and high enough to provide wireless transfer of rich digital multimedia formats. As UWB technology and process technologies evolve, bandwidth may exceed 1 Gb per second. SIMPLE, LOW COST IMPLEMENTATION: Implementation will follow the wired USB connectivity models as closely as possible to reduce development time and preserve the low-cost, ease-of-use model that has made wired USB the interconnect of choice. AN EASY MIGRATION PATH : To enable an easy migration path fromwired USB, Wireless USB will maintain the same usage models and architecture as wired USB.

8/17/ SECURITY: Wireless USB will provide the same level of security as wired USB. All certified Wireless USB devices will incorporate standard, non- removable security features. Connection-level security will be designed to ensure that devices are associated and that both hosts and devices are authenticated before operation. Higher levels of security involving encryption will be implemented at the application level. At the same time, an important goal of the specification is to ensure that security requirements do not impact the performance or cost of Wireless USB applications. HOST-TO-DEVICE ARCITECTURE : Wireless USB will use a point-to-point connection topology similar to the host-to-device architecture used for wired USB.

8/17/ WUSB TOPOLOGY.

8/17/  Wireless USB clusters use a simple hub and spoke topology, with point- to- point connections between the host and the devices connected to it.  The host which can logically connect to as many as 127 devices, initiates and schedules data transfers to the devices in the cluster, allotting time slots and bandwidth to each connected device.  Clusters will be able to physically overlap with minimal interference  Topology will support a dual role model where a device can also support limited host capabilities.  This model allows mobile devices to access services with a central host supporting the services (i.e., printers and viewers).  This model also allows a device to access data outside an existing cluster it may currently be connected to by creating a second cluster as a limited host. WUSB Cluster Topology

8/17/ PERFORMANCE  WUSB will operate as a wire replacement with targeted usage models for cluster connectivity to the host and device-to-device connectivity at least 10 meters.

8/17/ PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTAION

8/17/ Compatibility Options For Older Hardware. The WUSB architecture allows up to 127 devices to connect directly to a host. Because there are no wires or ports, there is no longer a need for hubs. However, to facilitate the migration from wired to wireless, WUSB introduced a new Device Wire Adapter (DWA) class. Sometimes referred to as a "WUSB hub", a DWA allows existing USB 2.0 devices to be used wirelessly with a WUSB host. WUSB host capability can be added to existing PCs through the use of a Host Wire Adapter (HWA). The HWA is a USB 2.0 device that attaches externally to a desktop or laptop's USB port or internally to a laptop's MiniCard interface.

8/17/ USAGE APPLICATION

8/17/ Typical Home Applications PCs and peripherals PDAs External storage devices (HDDs) HDTV's and STB’s Game consoles Digital cameras Digital camcorders DVD players MP3 players CD players Wireless speakers

8/17/ Typical Office Applications Laptop and notebooks computers Printers Scanners Projectors Mass storages devices (HDDs) PDAs Cell phones

8/17/ ADVANTAGES You can connect wirelessly. It is the easy and secure from plugging it in / unplugging it You do not need to have a network cable between the device and the network. You can connect fairly easily at home, work, multiple offices (since there is no cable to carry around or leave behind). You can move around or work at any available or suitable location without having to be near a socket.

8/17/ DISADVANTAGES Unless the security is not properly setup, both your laptop or desktop and the network you are connecting to cannot be compromised and your data can be accessed and read by others. The hardware is small, it can get damaged, lost or stolen. Reception is limited by distance and concrete and natural structures between you and the antenna (radio waves don't always propagate in a linear fashion in building, they get blocked by steel or concrete structures). Some older wireless networks can get very slow if there are lots of people in the same area, all trying to use the network (effectively trying to use the same radio bandwidth).

8/17/ SECURITY & DEVICE ASSOCIATION  WUSB security will ensure the same level of security as wired USB.  One of the primary objectives when implementing a wireless interconnect is that it is easy to install and use.  Higher levels of security involving encryption should be implemented at the application level.

8/17/ FUTURE & CONCLUSION. Early 2007  Initial devices being produced Late 2007  Expect WUSB being built into laptops, PCs, multimedia devices 2008  Visiongain research firm predicts increase of WUSB by 400 percent  Wide scale interoperability
