What is Confucius Institute? To help the world to understand China To project the image of intellectual and harmonious China Modelled after the British Council, Goethe Institute, Cervantis Institute, Alliance Francaise. The most promising/visible brand – 120 CIs by 2006 and aim for 500 by 2010.

Mission Promote Chinese language and Chinese cultures Develop understanding of contemporary China Enhance intercultural understanding between China and the rest of the world

How can schools benefit? Organise and run language taster and cultural workshop in your school; Help schools with the preparation of job description and advert for language teacher; Recommend language teachers with required experience and qualification; Advise schools of the qualification routes appropriate to the nature of the school and resources available; and the selection of textbooks and teaching/learning materials relating to the relevant qualification, i.e. GCSE, Asset or other qualifications (HSK);

How can schools benefit? Invite your school to join our school network and its associated activities; Help schools to organise China Day or China Week and advise on China cultural activities Access to the learning resources including reference books, online learning resources, audio and video materials; Prepare your pupils for language competition and other cultural events.

How can schools benefit? Advise teachers of teaching methodology specific to the Chinese language; Organise professional development programmes for the teachers with a long- term view of formal qualification; Develop suitable teaching and learning materials for KS2, 3 and 4.
