Near Death Experiences
Presentation transcript:

Near Death Experiences Reincarnation Mediums As good evidence for LAD As bad evidence For LAD - All people report similar experiences of joy, peace, perfection, light Only 3% of cases are reliable (ie the families didn’t meet beforehand). This makes it ANECDOTAL: you cannot conclude reincarnation is real from it. Mediums report knowledge about the dead person they have contacted, and details about the family that seems impossible for them to have. Paranormal as evidence: How would you respond to these arguments?

Why don’t some people believe in life after death? Be able to describe & explain why some people do not believe in LAD (either for religious, or non- religious (paranormal) reasons.)

Sceptics & Atheists… Sceptics doubt: – If LAD true, all religions should have the same beliefs/ experiences BUT believers of different religions have experiences which perhaps reflect their beliefs eg Virgin Mary ?? There is no scientific way of telling which religion to believe. It’s irrational. Solution: it’s probably all in the mind ! Atheists believe: There is nothing apart from this material world (no God, no spirit, only matter). So…nothing “paranormal” or spiritual can exist. – The only explanation is chemical reactions in the brain.

Choose 2 questions to answer (=no homework) A)Do you think Catholics are right to believe in life after death? Give 2 reasons for your point of view. (4marks) (BJC, immortality of the soul) B) “Belief in life after death makes no difference to the way Catholics live their lives”. Give 2 reasons for your point of view (4marks) Use notes from sheet for this. C) Explain why Catholics believe in life after death (8marks) (= BJC) D) “The paranormal proves that there is life after death” (6marks ) (evidence for/ against NDE, Reinc, Med) i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree with you (6 marks)
