Social Issue Colorisms Effect on African American Females This is an issue because it devalues individuals who may have a darker complexion then another person. It is destructive to individuals self-esteem. It can make it so that the darker the skin the less respect is given.

A Color Struck World This article taught me that there is actually a scale that measures ones brownness African-American women’s self-esteem is comparable to that of a white American The higher income you have the less skin color mattered to them

Colorism in Black Community Still Prevalent, Unacceptable The negativity of darker skin color is pushed from within the culture more than from the outside The mindset that darker girls are nothing but attitude and trouble People marry others that are lighter than themselves to make their children have more “favorable” characteristics

The Relationship Between Skin Complexion and Social Outcomes Lighter women gain a form of prestige African-American women are generally only based by their physicality Imitating whiteness helps to form safety against discrimination and violence

Intervention We will watch a movie like “Dark Girls”. We will have African- American families and anyone else who wants to attend. We will have popcorn. The next day we will have a forum about it I think this is a good idea because it will bring the issue to the front of peoples minds and show how large of an issue this is and how it can effect women.

Intervention It will take place in a public park like Sugarhouse It will cost about $500 for the projector, screen, rental of space, and popcorn I would like to do this with different movies 3 times a year during the summer months

Impact The impact I am hoping for would be for African- Americans to realize that it is happening at a large rate and to look internally and see if they are doing it on a personal level. If they are doing it on a personal level my hope is that it will help them want to stop.
