KNOW THE FACTS: SERIES I Navy Policy on Prescription Drugs This document is confidential and is intended solely for the use and information of the party to whom it is addressed.

Navy members shall never wrongfully possess, distribute or abuse drugs, be in possession of drug abuse paraphernalia, or be under the unauthorized influence of prescribed drugs. Members shall report all prescription medications received from non- military Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) to their chain of command and ensure they are entered into their military health record. Policy Defined

Sailors are never allowed to share their prescription medications Sailors are never allowed to posses drugs that were not prescribed to them, or prescription or illicit drug abuse-related materials Sailors are never allowed to consume any drugs that were not prescribed to them All medications must be reported to your command and Navy Medical promptly after they have been prescribed by your doctor to ensure they’re included in your medical records Policy Explained

These rules apply to everyone.

All Sailors must follow the Navy policy on drug abuse, even when stationed abroad The Navy defines prescription drug abuse as using a prescription medication in a way other than prescribed (e.g., too much or too frequently), or taking a prescription drug that was not prescribed to you Failure to follow Navy protocol for drug use will result in disciplinary action and potential for administrative separation Policy Explained

Members who self-report as positive for prescription drugs as a result of a legitimate prescription medication may be retained on active duty, provided commands submit a request to OPNAV (N170) that explains why the positive urinalysis is not a drug abuse incident. Policy Defined

Sailors who properly report their prescriptions to Navy Medical and their command will not be subject to disciplinary action if they test “positive” for that prescription drug Anyone who tests “positive” for a drug they are not prescribed may face administrative separation per the Navy’s zero-tolerance policy Policy Explained

Sailors should never possess or consume any prescription drugs that were not prescribed to them Sailors should never share their prescription medications with other Sailors or friends All prescriptions should be promptly reported to your command in order to avoid conflict if random drug testing should occur Any failure to comply with these policies may result in administrative separation from the Navy Series I: Review
