A history of “Sustainability” teaching Present Dr Sue Haile University Sustainable Advisor Senior Lecturer in CEAM Laura Diaz-Silvarrey, MSc Clean Technology student

Periodic reviews by Sue Haile WHY? So we all know what everyone else is doing So we can build new programmes Evidence for External stakeholders Requirement of University Policy/Strategy Module and Programmes reviewed in: 1999; 2003; 2006; 2009; 2011; 2012

Module selection criteria Method : Trawling through MOFs database, UG and PG pages, school websites etc…… Obviously subjective but consistent as I did all reviews Had to include Environment /Societal/ Economic aspects Some modules very focussed on SD, others just include some reference.

SD Modules modules: 26u/g 23 p/g (60% SAGE, 40% HaSS) BUT focussed on “environmental” not “sustainable” Some excellent examples: The Greening of Germany (German) Sustainable Development, Law & Ethics (Law) Corporate Environmental Policy (Business) World Development (Geography) Natural Resource and Environmental Economics (Economics)

SD Modules by Faculty 1999 and 2012/13 Can’t compare school by school due to changes since 1999

SD Modules 2012 : currently 148 (72 u/g 76 p/g) More use of the word “Sustainable” and in more schools “Developing skills to make sense of global challenges - sustainable development “ (Agric) “Sustainable Industry” (Chem Eng) “Understanding Sustainable Development” (Architec) “ Design of Sustainable Engineering Systems “(Civil Eng) “ Climate and Environmental Change: Present, Future and Past “ (Geog and Pol Sci) “ Natural Resource and Environmental Economics “ (Business) “ Science, Climate Change and Environmental Justice “ (Law)

SD Modules by school 2012 Agriculture, Food & Rural Development ; Architecture, Planning & Landscape ; Biology; Chem &Mat Eng, Civil Eng& Geosci; Geography, Politics & Sociology Mechanical & systems eng, Marine Sci, Law, Business

SD Programmes At least 15 % SD modules in compulsory taught element More specialised focus at p/g level but also embedded at u/g now Increase partly as we are adding SD modules into many other programmes where you might not expect to see them e.g. MSc Industrial Quality Technology, (CEAM)

SD Programmes 2012/13 Agriculture Food & Rural Development ; Architecture, Planning & Landscape ; Biology; Chem &Mat Eng; Civil Eng& Geosci; Geography; Politics & Sociology; Mechanical & Systems Eng; Marine Sci, Law; Business School

Examples of programmes with significant emphasis on SD 2012 MSc Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security (AFRD) MEng Chemical Engineering (Sustainability) (CEAM) MEng (Hons) Mechanical and Low Carbon Transport Engineering (MSE) MSc Planning for Sustainability and Climate Change (APL) Environmental Regulation and Sustainable Development LLM (Law) MSc Hydrology and Climate Change (CEG)

Developments Modular system helps programmes to include SD as can use modules from other schools. More inclusion and mention of SD principles into other modules e.g. CME 1025, 2021 Case studies are a means of adding a “sustainability” aspect to modules Fourth years U/G and P/G can share modules Optional modules mean more SD can be included Design project, final year and thesis projects should all include elements of SD

Issues FTEs Syllabus already full Timetabling problems when delivering to mixed groups Potentially very large classes

SD Stand alone web Module Has been discussed for last 10 years! Accessible by all including staff. Link to Ecocampus Platinum and ISO14001 MSc student last year worked on format and content Self learning? Assessment? Credit bearing, ownership and funding?

Summary Increase in both SD Programmes (85) and Modules (148) Focus still in SaGE Relative to the overall number of programmes (over 1000) and Modules (over 4000) we still haven’t totally “embedded across the curriculum”.
