 Development- the act or process of developing; growth; progress  Sustainable Development- defined as development that “meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (WCED)

 It emphasizes meeting needs rather than promoting growth or satisfying consumer preferences as the defining characteristic of “development.”

 Society  Economy  Environment No matter the context, the basic idea remains the same- people, inhabitants and economic systems are inter-related.

 is concerned with the process of making sure that the current interactions with the environment are pursued with the intent of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible. help-protect-us-from-ourselves/

 here we refer to the Green Economy, and the three pillars of sustainability.  “In economy like in ecology, the interdependence rule applies. Isolated actions are impossible. A policy which is not carefully enough thought will carry along various perverse and adverse effects for the ecology as much as for the economy. (John Baden) with-growth-to-help-protect-us-from-ourselves/

 A sustainable Society is a society that… meets the needs of the present generation, does not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, and in which each human being has the opportunity to develop itself in freedom, within a well-balanced society and in harmony with its surroundings.

 Sustainable Development is also a means for considering the relationships of things to each other in order to propose viable solutions.

Sustainable Development calls for a world in which … economic progress is widespread; extreme poverty is eliminated; social trust is encouraged through policies that strengthen the community; and the environment is protected from human-induced degradation. Source: sachs

 Sustainable development recommends a holistic framework, in which society aims for economic, social, and environmental goals: SDGs call for socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable economic growth.

 A good society is not only a wealthy and progressive society but environmental and well governed society. (Prof. Jeffrey Sachs)  “sustainable development is not a fixed state of harmony but rather a process of change… ” ( Mrs. Gro Harlem Brundtland the former Prime Minister of Norway, and chairperson of the WCED)
