BioCrossroads’ STEM Criteria Teachers are critical – Professional development and more rigorous STEM teacher preparation are key as the math or science teacher is the most influential component of student success Use of inquiry-based, proven curricular materials Use of data collection and accountability measures Focus on science, especially K-8 Leveraging and connecting existing STEM activity Programs that set and maintain a high bar for student achievement!!
BioCrossroads concentrated its effort and investment in: Support for Project Lead the Way and its Biomedical Science curriculum Support for AP STEM (to non-traditional AP students) through the National Math and Science Initiative’s partnership with the University of Notre Dame – AP-TipIN program Support for the ISTEM Resource Network and the Indiana Science Initiative in partnership with Purdue University and with financial support from the Lilly Endowment and the Eli Lilly Company Foundation
Results AP TipIN (partner - University of Notre Dame, Karen Morris) * Raised over $10M for Advanced Placement courses in MSE AP * Number of students taking AP courses has risen from 2,577 in Year 1 to 10,378 in Year 3 * Number of AP MSE Qualifying scores has tripled between year 1 and 2 (still waiting for Year 3 results) * 261 MSE AP teachers in 30 schools
Indiana Science Initiative (lead partner - Purdue University/Paul Ainslie) *Raised over $10M for K-8 inquiry-based science instruction * Provided PD for 2,197 K-8 science teachers * Engaged with over 51,000 students statewide * Delivered over 4 tons of science materials to support kit refurbishment * Raised science and ELA ISTEP scores from below to above state averages across a diverse range of schools
Consider this BioCrossroads has helped to raise almost $20 million dollars of support in the last 8 years for these STEM programs Private dollars also provide major support for Project Lead the Way, Woodrow Wilson and Teach for America
What are the next steps for Indiana? Indiana needs a highly visible statewide STEM education strategy that provides a template for public and private investment That continues to support rigorous STEM education policies in the state That is led by organizations or individuals with the gravitas to make change happen and to garner public sector support.
