First Hand Smoke This is when you are the one who is smoking The smoke from the cigarette goes right into your lungs – yuck! Updated 2013

Second Hand Smoke This is when someone else is smoking, and you breathe in the smoke that they blow out. This is even more harmful than First Hand Smoke! Updated 2013

Second-hand Smoke Can cause breathing problems. Can sometimes cause diseases that make it hard to breathe (called asthma). Your heart has to work harder Can make you really sick. Updated 2013

Second-hand Smoke Has even worse chemicals than 1st hand smoke Why do you think this makes it even worse for people who smoke? Answer: People who smoke get both the first and the second hand smoke. They get double the chemicals! Updated 2013

Latest and Newest...Third-hand Smoke What is it? It is the smoke that sticks to smokers' hair, clothing, furniture, curtains, carpets, or other surfaces. e.g. the smoke left on seats and cushions, or that scent you pick up in the elevator as the smoker comes back inside. Updated 2013

Third-hand Smoke Third hand smoke sticks to things for a long time, even when there’s no more second hand smoke, and it’s easy for kids and babies to breathe it in It has lots of bad chemicals that are dangerous and can cause cancer. Long Term Consequences CANCER Most lung cancer is caused by smoking cigarettes There are more than 43 chemicals in a cigarette that can cause cancer! Smoking ain’t no laughing matter Many scientists who study the effects of smoking say that it’s the single most preventable cause of death in the country! That’s about 3400 Albertans or 47 000 Canadians who die for an unnecessary reason EACH YEAR. Updated 2013

The MOST important things to know about smoking: Smoking is not cool. It makes you smell, it makes your body sick, and it is really really hard to stop smoking… SO DON’T EVEN START! It is really important to say “NO” if anyone ever tries to get you to smoke. One of the best things you can do is to never start smoking! Keep your bodies healthy! It IS cool to NOT smoke!
