Our Role: From Campus to Community The Volunteer & Service Learning Center provides service-learning opportunities for UVU students, faculty, and staff. Through programs and projects in the classroom, the community and the world, the Center works to increase social and cultural awareness, build a sense of community commitment and extend meaningful educational opportunities that increase knowledge and enhance academic skills.

Why do we do it? ‘s Mission: Utah Valley University is a teaching institution which provides opportunity, promotes student success, and meets regional educational needs. UVU builds on a foundation of substantive scholarly and creative work to foster engaged learning. The university prepares professionally competent people of integrity who, as life-long learners and leaders, serve as stewards of a globally interdependent community. Student Success UVU fosters a culture of academic rigor and professional excellence. UVU engages its community in mutually beneficial collaboration and emphasizes engaged learning. UVU provides opportunity for Individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives and meets regional educational needs. Serious Engaged Inclusive Core Themes 2010:

How do we do it? Academic Service-Learning o Service-learning is an academic teaching pedagogy that combines academic objectives with a service experience. UVU offers over 50 service-learning classes each semester. Student Leadership o Service Scholar Program – This is a program that recognizes students for their service. Students who successfully complete the program receive a distinction on their transcript and honor cords at graduation. o Service Council – The Service Council is a group of student leaders dedicated to planning and implementing student-run programs for the benefit of UVU and the community. During the academic year, students facilitated 180 events. Community Outreach o Community Partnership – Our office provides training to approved community partners and provide resources such as: Service Fairs, access to students, trainings, etc.

Purpose of Community Partnerships We seek to connect service and learning through the establishment of Approved Community Partnerships, which will create cohesive objectives that demonstrate engaged learning to students and the community.

Types of Community Partnerships

Basic Requirements for All Partners Maintain communications with the Volunteer & Service-Learning Center by: o Responding to requests from the Center o Notifying the Center of any contact changes Ensure the volunteer assignment(s) will not displace any employed worker or impair existing contract for services Ensure that student volunteers are kept in line of sight of a supervisor at all times unless they have been satisfactorily background checked the community partner’s standards, hence the Volunteer & Service-Learning Center is not responsible for any unacceptable or inappropriate behavior or performance of a student volunteer Provide student volunteers with a safe learning environment and an orientation which informs student volunteer of potential risks Investigate and report any concerns to the Volunteer & Service- Learning Center involving student volunteers Provide background checks required for student volunteers.
