Leadership Lifesavers: Time Management Brought to you by: Title Slide 1

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot. -Michael Althshuler 2 Quotation Slide #LeadershipLifesavers

Find out what type of organizer you are Use a daily planner? Academic goal maker? Attached to your blackberry, trio or similar device? Procrastinate with schoolwork? Organize time well? Very motivated? Not motivated? Have short visits with people when I need to study? Have visitors all of the time for long amounts of time? Prioritize activities to focus on and recognize the ones that aren’t? Perfectionist? Have enough time to pursue leisure activities? #LeadershipLifesavers 3 Generic Slide

Common Strategies 1: Prioritize and Categorize: Ordering your goals, tasks, and items in terms of their priority and the time you expect is needed to complete them. Make sure that you also prioritize and categorize events that are important to you: gym time, meal time, social time, etc Prioritize things like eating, sleeping, and being active. A healthy you is a productive you. 2: Write down the list of tasks after you have prioritized and categorized them. This can be in a daily planner, as a note on your laptop, on your phone, wherever you are likely to see it often. Try a number of different approaches For this list you can also assign deadlines on “Must Do” items and mark flexible commitments 3: Add incentives to fulfilling your goals and doing you tasks. When doing my schedule, I will give myself several hours in the library to complete a paper or study, and then I will plan a flexible commitment like watching Netflix with a friend. This social time acts as a reward if I finish the task; yet, it can be moved if I find myself needing more time. #LeadershipLifesavers 4 Generic Slide

Still Lacking Time? Create a Time Log and track down how much time you are spending on activities like walking to class, eating, socializing, studying, etc. At the end of the week total up the time spent doing each of these activities. Are there any that you feel like you are spending too much time doing? Too little time? Create an ideal distribution of time spent doing these events. Create lists and schedules events with this distribution in mind. #LeadershipLifesavers 5 Generic Slide

Organizing Anything: s Here I have an example of my inbox on any given day. I have these s color marked to indicate category and priority. Yellow: Requires quick response Blue: Requires time to complete Purple: Relay. High priority, requires moderate time The selected s are those that can be deleted right away Chart / Infographic Slide 6 #LeadershipLifesavers

Good Luck! Organizing certain tasks where you find yourself spending time (like reading s) can be very helpful to completing these tasks in a more efficient manner. Prioritizing and Categorizing are two tools which will help make you To-Do List much more manageable. Don’t become a perfectionist about scheduling and organizing. Eventually the work needs to be done and if you are spending too much time organizing and not getting the work done you aren’t making the most of the organization. #LeadershipLifesavers 7 Generic Slide
