Quiz Review for Scientific Method and Experimental Design Mrs. Ball 7th grade GATE science

Scientific Method Definitions Scientific Method - A series of steps that a scientist follows to solve a problem or answer a question Hypothesis – an educated guess that must be testable Experiment – process of testing the hypothesis

Analysis – collected data and results organized into tables or graphs Conclusion – where the hypothesis is stated as “right” or “wrong” and a summary of the results Data – information collected from the experiment Observations – any information collected with the senses (sight, sound, touch, smell)

Metric Measurements value metric unit tool/instrument mass gram triple beam balance length meter ruler or a meter stick volume of a regular object (L x W x H) volume of an irregular object liter graduated cylinder (amt of H2O w/ object) – (amt of H2O w/o object) = volume of irregular object

Lab Safety You must be able to list 2 safety statements. Here are a few examples: All chemicals in the lab, including food stuff and store bought chemicals should be treated as if they could be hazardous. Lab work should NOT be started until the teacher is present in the room and instructions are given. Always wear all safety equipment provided to you.

Steps of the Scientific Method Remember – Queens Hate Eggs And Cheese Question Hypothesis Experiment Analysis Conclusion

Experimental Design independent variable (IV) - “What is being changed?” - “What is different between the groups?” dependent variable (DV) - “What is being measured or observed?” controlled variables (CV) - “What has not been changed?” - “What has stayed the same?”

Students put 1 teaspoon of vinegar in several graduated cylinders Students put 1 teaspoon of vinegar in several graduated cylinders. They added red food coloring to each. Then they added different amounts of baking soda to each graduated cylinder and observed the amount of foam formed. IV – amount of baking soda DV – amount of foam formed CV – 1 teaspoon of vinegar, red food coloring
