6 Quick Ways to Integrate Technology in Your Class From Beginning To End Presenter: Andrea Nguyen, CTHS anguyen@pasadenaisd.org #pisdtechacademy2015

With so many different web tools and apps for teachers out there, which should you choose? If you don’t have a lot of time to learn to learn new programs, here are my recommendations:

Tech Tools for Teachers: Youtube youtube.com Google Drive drive.google.com Memes using Google Drive & Snip It tool Poll Everywhere polleverywhere.com QR Codes qrstuff.com Schoology schoology.com EASY SIMPLE EFFECTIVE

Youtube We all use Youtube, but here is how it can rock the classroom: Students are more engaged through visually-stimulating videos Students can upload their own videos to demonstrate understanding Students can create video replies to each other Videos can supplement lessons for students Teachers can spend more time focusing on students Teachers will have a library of free information

Anticipatory Set / “HOOK” What is Anticipatory Set? - http://ed491.weebly.com/uploads/8/4/6/1/8461140/anticipatorysets.pdf At the beginning of class, use YOUTUBE to grab students’ attention and prepare them for what they’re about to learn. Keep it brief and engaging. Music videos are good, too. YOUTUBE: (SchoolHouseRock, Vsauce, ASAPscience, ASAPthought, GoodMythicalMorning,) Miscommunication: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3a3fgUkw6c Audio Illusion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzo45hWXRWU Nonverbal Communication (hand signs): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWFPHW7BCCI

TEACHING/ ENRICHMENT Show short and interesting videos (5 to 15 minutes long) that compliment your lessons or to help explain a complex topic: Optical Illusions in Photography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M82wF72RAAw History of Photography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaGUL8B-BrE How the heart pumps blood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H04d3rJCLCE OTHER POPULAR YOUTUBE CHANNELS FOR TEACHERS: http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2013/11/30-youtube-channels-for-teachers.html

TRANSITIONS & OTHER USES Use music videos on Youtube or Pandora to help students transition from one activity to another. Use the “Baby Come Back” video to call students back to their seats after a group activity, gallery walk, or quick break. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn-enjcgV1o Classroom Karaoke, anyone? (INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION TEACHER SONGS)- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1krUCp5YCVIFbfzn5F0dMxhuXZ5cYy40RWftB8XicaWI/edit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hADkVcIiNfg (Party in the USA) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2c9gnHMTn8 (Turn the Lights Down Low) Create a “dance” to help teach your lesson by using music on youtube https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5hr87xVLlG3UTFySmNRLXhhQlk/view?usp=sharing (NONVERBAL) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h24_zoqu4_Q (CUPID SHUFFLE) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aJ38sOgGPHdLGUhKB5KWpb14sOxlZnWYT3oIBRPnXm0/edit (STEPS)

Google Drive Having a Google Drive account is like having an online desktop you can access at any computer anywhere you have web access. You can store documents, slideshows, and spreadsheets in the cloud. It’s free and easy to use. What it looks like - https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive CHAMPS - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xC1N3CVBufeoKhO2bjBXpCC32PFtz63NcD4n01Kbmng/edit#slide=id.p STUDENT RESOURCES TO SETTING UP ONLINE ACCOUNTS - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1JiGOX7XV0XPFUdjC5w7ooJZKkjfr5H79sHyNBhASt48/edit#slide=id.g553217176_00 SUPPORT - https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2424384?hl=en

Examples of how I use Google Slides I use Google Slides for warm ups, attendance, polling and exit tickets: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1sRLCwcV3Ddmf4a-qkj4h9g17wlGDWoxgGcjSeNikxJQ/edit#slide=id.g4fe844691_034 (Attendance/ Polling) https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1uZIX0RDLtsZq0BCvnxisTh9_Q0wLJcqfSk3q18-VHc8/edit#slide=id.g6d929ce28_020 (Daily Quick Speeches) https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/17q0IiTOuvSqJl5iMzAC79Fez7JrSusVmfFhTaNN131A/edit#slide=id.p (Website Edition) https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12S2SK9bq-jQ2rJTUvM8rszCBVU-XvH7Jw9vRu1yLcJk/edit#slide=id.ga4e25f6a8_0_28 (Exit Tickets & Checking for Understanding)

Memes Memes are funny photos with clever sayings super- imposed. They are very popular among kids, especially visual learners. They make your messages more memorable and interesting. You can copy memes you find online or create your own. Use them for classroom rules and warm ups. BASIC PROCEDURES: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1M9q2tVdP4YzL_5QhH0nBnAQzp754S_dCjMBW3bppy9E/edit#slide=id.g4b982d094_012 WARM UPS: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1MjBsqpkqbDhHw0_YWonrlbB3v9WVvMOWoqzAM6KFczM/edit#slide=id.p

How to Create a Meme on Google Slides You have 8 minutes left until the bell. It’s Easy Copy and paste a silly picture you found online. Add text. Use the IMPACT font. Use the Snip It Tool if you want to save it on your desktop computer. Wrap it up!

Poll Everywhere https://www.polleverywhere.com/ Poll Everywhere is an application that allows students to take polls you’ve created online. It’s a great tool for discussion, sharing, collaborating, and getting quick feedback. Use Poll Everywhere before you start your lesson to check for prior knowledge … or after your lesson to check for understanding.

Example of How I use Poll Everywhere in my class: “Give me an example of how speech can help you with your career pathway.” https://www.polleverywhere.com/free_text_polls/Zg088x064foIZeD

QR Codes With a QR code scanner on their smartphones, students can scan a QR code created by a teacher in order to launch themselves to a certain website or online document. This will save them time from having to type in a long URL.

How to create QR codes: www.qrstuff.com .

Examples of how I use QR codes: I use QR codes for warm ups, lessons, and student workshops. https://docs.google.com/document/d/10raImrgwEaTDoucZer0hEobWwbLilh-SMXsqeULVbXY/edit (SPEECH IN VARIOUS PROFESSIONS) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kyYA13VEwsHs_Mionh9WqjblDfHRAkiNCaFZBP_zKGU/edit (MEDIA DAY)

Schoology Schoology is an online learning, classroom management, and social networking platform that improves learning through better communication, collaboration, and increased access to curriculum and supplemental content. I use Schoology to share with students my syllabus, lesson plans, make up work, tests, etc. https://www.schoology.com/course/172343000/materials?f=19267532 (SPEECH FOLDERS) https://www.schoology.com/course/172343000/materials?f=16443236 (ASSIGNMENTS) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mh0nD_9UVqxp127X-ulWFnd_vru1qFzk39SJd4nSycg/edit#gid=2076923064 (RATE RESULTS)

Technology makes life easier It’s so much easier for me to update my information. It saves paper and time. My students have access to their work anywhere they have access to the internet. If I assign them partner or group work, they can all edit the same project at one time.

Use Tech Tools for Teaching! As educators, we should take advantage of what is already out there. Use Technology Tools for Teaching. Thank you for your time! THE END
