Newly Revised 2011 Arkansas Physical Education and Health Curriculum Framework Overview Presented by Arkansas Department of Education Tammy Harrell 1

Videoconference Objectives To review the framework revision process To introduce the newly revised framework in Physical Education and Health for grades K-8 and High School Courses To review the design and format of the framework To review the curriculum flow from grade level to grade level and grade specific framework 2

Purpose of Framework Revision Process Examine national and state physical education/health standards Ensure specific elements of the framework document are included in the revision process Develop within each strand grade-by-grade standards Determine strands and provide clear student learning expectations 3

Specific Elements Content coverage Rigor Developmental appropriateness and progression Level of specificity Clarity Coherence Alignment with recognized standards 4

Revision Process Review content standards from across the nation and international levels Utilize and evaluate state data, national groups, and organization reports –(e.g., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, APNA data, Risk Factors for Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Arkansas, President’s Council on Physical Fitness) 5

Arkansas Standards for Accreditation Committee shall consist of teachers and instructional supervisory personnel from public schools and higher education Schools shall use curriculum frameworks to plan instruction. 6
