The Physicians Foundation 2014 Survey of America’s Physicians One of the largest and most comprehensive physician surveys conducted in the U.S. 20,000+ physician responses in multiple specialties and in all 50 states Provides insights into: Physician workforce dynamics Practice patterns Professional morale Career plans and overall perspectives 4

The Physicians Foundation 2014 Survey of America’s Physicians Physician Practice – 33 percent of physicians participate in insurance products through state / federal marketplace exchanges 28 percent have no plans to participate – 26 percent participate in Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) 13 percent believe ACOs will enhance quality and decrease costs – 46 percent would give would give the Affordable Care Act a ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade, while 25 percent give it an ‘A’ or ‘B’ – 69 percent believe clinical autonomy is sometimes or often limited and their decisions compromised 6

The Physicians Foundation 2014 Survey of America’s Physicians Patient Access and Physician Shortages – 8 in 10 physicians (81 percent) describe themselves as either over- extended or at full capacity – Only 19 percent indicate they have time to see more patients – 44 percent of physicians plan to take steps to reduce patient access to their services, including Cutting back on patients seen Retiring or working part-time Closing their practice to new patients or seeking non-clinical jobs 13 percent will switch to concierge practice – On average, physicians surveyed said 49 percent of their patients are enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid Yet, 24 percent of physicians surveyed either do not see Medicare patients or limit the number Medicare patients they see 7

The Physicians Foundation 2014 Survey of America’s Physicians Physician Morale – A majority of physicians (56 percent) describe their feelings as somewhat or very negative relative to the current state of the medical profession 44 percent characterize themselves as somewhat or very positive about the current state of the medical profession, compared to 32 percent in 2012 – Younger, female and employed physicians and primary care physicians are somewhat more positive – Older, male physicians, medical specialists and medical practice owners are somewhat less positive – 71 percent would still choose to be a physician if they had to do it over 8

The Physicians Foundation 2014 Survey of America’s Physicians Additional Findings – 85 percent of physicians indicate that they have implemented EMR systems Only 24 percent say that EMR systems have improved efficiency Only 32 percent say that it has improved quality of care – 50 percent of physicians indicate implementation of ICD-10 will cause severe administrative problems in their practices – Physicians spend 20 percent of time on non-clinical paperwork – MDs work an average of 53 hours / week and see approximately 20 patients / day 9

The Physicians Foundation Physician Leadership Grants Upcoming Physician Leadership Grants – Renewal Physician Leadership Grants Physician Leadership grantees with a completed grant will be eligible to submit for renewal for the same project RFP released October 31, 2014 and May 20, 2015 Deadlines are November 19, 2014 and June 10, 2015 Awards will be up to $75,000 per year for 2 years – New Physician Leadership Grants Organizations without a Physician Leadership grant or with a new project not previously funded will be eligible to apply for a grant RFP will be released January 24, 2015 Deadline is February 17, 2015 Awards will be up to $75,000 per year for 2 years 11
