TEMPERATE RAINFOREST BIOME BY: OWEN MALONEY

WHERE IT’S AT  The Temperate rainforest biome only exists on three continents.  The first of these continents is North America, the forest is located in the coastal regions of British Columbia, Seattle bay area, and southern Alaska.  The rainforest on South America is located in the coastal regions of Chile.  The last location that contains one of these forests is New Zealand

CLIMATE  The temperate rainforest has an annual rainfall of between 200 centimeters to 350 centimeters.  The average temperature is around 32 degrees Fahrenheit but in the warmer climates the average can reach 68 degrees Fahrenheit  Can be as cold as -22 degrees in the winter and as hot as 89 degrees in the summer  The temperature is strongly influenced by the ocean.  The soil in a temperate rainforest is very rich  Has one long wet season in the spring and one dry season in the summer

MAMMALS  The temperate rainforest has thousands of species inside of it.  A species of squirrel that is known as the Northern flying squirrel is exclusive to this environment.  It can grow up to ten inches and can stretch out its skin to for a sort of parachute it can glide with.  A species of bat is also native to this environment it is called the Long-Eared Myotis  a species of mouse that resembles a chipmunk is native it is known as the red backed voles  A actual chipmunk that resides there is the Townsend chipmunk  The smallest mole, shrew moles, resides here

BIRDS  Several birds reside here including:  Marbled Murrelet  Spotted Owl  the Clark’s Nutcracker  the Blue grouse  The Varied Thrush, a carboniferous robin  Almost all of the birds that live in these rainforests feed on fish

INVERTEBRATES AND REPTILES There is a species of slug Banana slug which can grow to the size of a banana and weigh one hundred grams Some others were: California giant salamander red-bellied newt Foothill yellow-legged frog Northern Pacific rattlesnake Western pond turtle

TREES  Large carboniferous trees dominate the habitat.  They include:  Douglas fir  Western red cedar  Sitkaspruce  Mountain hemlock  Western hemlock  Lodgepole pine  Big-Leaf Maple  Sequoia (biggest and tallest tree in the world)

OTHER PLANT LIFE  There is also lichen and moss that often live as epiphytes  There are also several species of shrubs

THE BENEFITS  The Temperate rainforests provide several things  They provide habitats for animals  They purify the air producing oxygen  They shield surrounding cities from weather
