Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) GE Security Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Training Richard Hobson May 2004

Introduction What is UTP? UTP (Unbalanced Twisted Pair) is a new way of transmitting CCTC signal on ordinary low-cost CAT 5 type data cables using low-cost Baluns (Balance Unbalance) Why UTP? Most new commercial (and even residential) building developments are installing CAT 5 data ‘’backbones’’ as standard for building management systems. These can be integrated TCP/IP or standard protocols (Eg: LonWorks). If there is spare unused cabling UTP CCTV can use existing installations. Cat 5 cable is significantly cheaper than traditional RG59 and can fit far more conductors into a smaller space. This can be an advantage when duct/riser space is limited, particularly in older buildings.

Benefits of UTP Immunity to noise Long distances (Over 1km) Easy wire installation Multiple video signals in the same bundle RS-422/RS-485 in the same bundle 12VDC/24VAC in the same bundle Lower cabling costs Space saving

Noise Immunity Benefits Better interference immunity from: Neighboring cables/pairs Fluorescent lights Industrial Transformers and Motors Radio Transmitters

Noise Immunity Better interference immunity because of the ‘’twist’’ in a twisted pair cable:

Why UTP? Take advantage of: Structured Building Wiring The telecom industry has developed a GREAT system employing: High density cables Colour coded Mass termination Super low cost

Where to use UTP? Locations where overall cost is less: Within or Between Bldgs Old/Listed buildings Elevators Hospitals Prisons Casinos Schools Office Developments Shopping Malls Hotels/Resorts Warehouses Amusement Parks Apartment Complexes Parking Garages Mass Transit Systems Entry Gates Traffic Control

Ethernet / IP Based Transmission Comparisons Coax Fiber Ethernet / IP Based Transmission

Comparisons: vs Coax UTP vs. Coax 100 cables RG-59 Coax 1,100 pairs Category 3 UTP 100 pairs Category 3 UTP

Comparisons: vs coax Smaller conductors More dense More flexible Colour coded Superior interference immunity

Comparisons: vs coax Surge suppression (built-in) Active units w/built-in ground lifting Active units w/built-in gain control Long distances (up to 1.2 Km) Low wire costs (sometimes it’s free!) Use coax for short runs, under 100 meters

Comparisons: vs Fiber Less complexity and special skills needed for installation Lower cable cost Similar features with lower Tx/Rx cost No power required (many cases) No minimum bend radius issues Lower cost termination tools & test equipment No dB loss calculations

Comparisons: Ethernet Much longer distance (100 meter TCP/IP limit between camera and hub) No limited bandwidth issues specified by IT managers No “frame rate” comparison (all images are Real Time) Analogue vs Digital No picture degradation due to compression artifacts Put the IP requirement at the head-end, not at the cameras

UTP Limitations Base-band only (not for CATV) Active units do not support“ up-the-coax” P/T/Z controls Not “broadcast” quality (>800 lines) Distance limited to 1200 meters, point-to-point Remember! Do NOT use SHIELDED wire Do NOT use UN-TWISTED wire

Wire Types Bad Bad OK (300M max) OK (300M max) Excellent Shielded wire: Don’t use Bad Quad wire: Don’t use, Not Twisted! Red Green Yellow Black Bad Category 1 & 2 - Voice grade OK (300M max) OK for some transceivers Category 3 – Telephone/Voice/data grade OK (300M max) OK for most transceivers Category 5+ - High speed Excellent

Passive Equipment: Passive up to 400 meters Supports “up-the-coax” P/T/Z controls Built-in surge suppression All units are transceivers so can be deployed at either end Multi Standard NTSC, PAL, SECAM

Active Equipment: Up to 1200 meters (colour). Longer with Mono Does not support “up-the-coax” P/T/Z controls Use RS-422 or RS-485 if going longer or large camera count Built-in ground lifting and gain control Surge suppression for outdoor applications Multi Standard NTSC, PAL, SECAM

There are two basic types of UTP transceivers :- Passive and Active Basic product type: There are two basic types of UTP transceivers :- Passive and Active These can be used in one of the following three ways depending on distance and type of cable used Passive Active

Passive to Passive (400M Cat5) Passive is the simplest type of UTP Balun It does not need an external power source, but does have distance limitations Passive Tx/Rx are always transceivers, so units can be used at either end of the system

Passive to Active (800M Cat5) Passive to Active has the advantage of extended range (800M), plus it does not need external power down at the camera end The Active receivers can be individually specified and powered or utilise rack mount hubs for easy installation

Active to Active (1.2km Cat5) Active to Active has the advantage of of super extended range (1200M), Active receivers offer extra noise immunity and surge protection Active transmitters and receivers need 12Vdc at camera and receiver ends to operate Active transmitters have 3 position gain switch (L,M,H) and active receivers have a 5 position gain switch depending on cable length used. First set the 5 position DIP switch on the receiver depending on cable length deployed Meters (Cat 5) Position 1 = 0-200 Position 2 = 200-500 Position 3 = 500-800 Position 4 = 800-1100 Position 5 = 1100-1500 Then, if necessary set the Transmitter gain to Low, Medium or High to achieve a 1 volt Pk to Pk video signal
