What is a quadrilateral? Navigation Bar What is a quadrilateral? Home Types of Quadrilaterals According to wikipedia, a quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides and four vertices and edges. If you click on the “i” to the right you can have a deeper explanation of what a quadrilateral is. There are many different types of quadrilaterals. We will discuss those in the slides ahead. Check for Understanding Quiz It is important to remember that all quadrilaterals have FOUR sides.

Recognizing Quadrilaterals Navigation Bar Recognizing Quadrilaterals Home You can recognize a quadrilateral by a few ways. The first way is by counting the number of lines indicated by the green arrows. There should be exactly four lines if it is a quadrilateral. The next way is by counting the vertices. The vertices are indicated by the red arrows. Another way to determine if it is a quadrilateral is if the sum on the interior angles is 360 degrees. You will need a protractor for this. This will be explained in more detail in a later lesson. The video link to right may help you remember these qualities. Types of Quadrilaterals Check for Understanding Quiz

Navigation Bar Convex vs. Concave Home Types of Quadrilaterals Check for Understanding A concave polygon will cave into the middle of the shape. For example if you were to extend each line on the shape one if not more lines would go through the shape. A convex polygon will never cave in. For example if you were to extend each line on the polygon the lines would never go through the shape. Quiz

Types of Quadrilaterals Navigation Bar Types of Quadrilaterals Home Types of Quadrilaterals We will begin by looking at a rectangle. A rectangle has 4 right angles and the opposite sides are equal. Check for Understanding Quiz Where might you see a rectangle in real life? What about a swimming pool. Have you ever thought about that?

Navigation Bar Rhombus Home Types of Quadrilaterals A rhombus has 4 equal sides. A rhombus has two pairs of parallel sides and opposite sides are equal. Check for Understanding Quiz Again, let’s think about where we might see a rhombus is real life. How about some street signs like the one to the right?

A trapezoid has four side and only two sides that are parallel. Navigation Bar Trapezoid Home Types of Quadrilaterals A trapezoid has four side and only two sides that are parallel. Check for Understanding Quiz Ok, so now let’s think about where a trapezoid could be found in our everyday lives’. Often times lamps, like the one to the right, are in the shape of a trapezoid.

A kite has two pairs of adjacent sides of the same length. Navigation Bar Kite Home Types of Quadrilaterals A kite has two pairs of adjacent sides of the same length. Check for Understanding Quiz I am sure you have seen an example of a kite before. You know, the common kite you probably flew when you were a kid.

Navigation Bar Parallelogram Home Types of Quadrilaterals A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides and its’ opposite sides are equal. Check for Understanding Quiz Any ideas about parallelograms in your everyday life? You shouldn’t have too much trouble. Just think about your appliances at home. Your microwave, stove, and cabinets are probably parallelograms.

A square has four right angles and four congruent sides. Navigation bar Square Home Types of Quadrilaterals A square has four right angles and four congruent sides. Check for Understanding Quiz Squares are everywhere around us. Think of some.

Family of Quadrilaterals Navigation Bar Family of Quadrilaterals Home Types of Quadrilaterals As you have noticed throughout this tutorial there are many different types of quadrilaterals. The quadrilaterals fall under certain categories similar to a family tree as illustrated in this slide. Check for Understanding Quiz Note: You will notice a kite is not on this diagram, but it would be in its own family segment.

Check for Understanding Navigation bar Check for Understanding Home Types of Quadrilaterals Critique the following sentence. The purple shape to the right is a trapezoid and a rhombus because there are a pair of parallel lines. Check for Understanding Quiz Once you have finished answering this question compare it to the correct answer by clicking the green button to the right.

2. Is this convex or concave? Navigation Bar Quiz Home Types of Quadrilateralsu 1. Name this shape 2. Is this convex or concave?
